Abdul Blames Painkillers For ‘Weird’ Behavior (was wearing 80x morphine pain patch)

Paula Abdul maintains that she’s never been drunk, but she does admit that she can “get weird.”

In the June issue of Ladies’ Home Journal, it’s revealed that Abdul had a condition, reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome, that required aggressive pain management.

She wore a patch that delivered a pain medication 80 times more potent than morphine, took a nerve medication, and sometimes took a muscle relaxer, according to LHJ.

It was this combination that Abdul said caused her to “get weird,” at times.

It’s been confirmed that all four “American Idol” judges will be back next year, but LHJ reports that uncertainty about Abdul has been there since day one.

“After her first day she tried to quit seven times,” the magazine reports.

That doesn’t seem to jibe with Abdul’s sentiment that she “always knew the show was going to be a big success,” but then again, Abdul is not always the best at communicating clearly.

So, let’s focus on the important parts: “‘American Idol’ has been a gift,” Abdul told the magazine. “Nothing makes me happier than nurturing talent and seeing them rise and take flight. It’s my true calling in life.”

She was wearing a Fentnyl patch? And could still lift her head...She must have had one hell of a tolerance.

At least she didn't blame it on Ambien.

She must have had one hell of a tolerance.

If you are in enough pain then you can almost function normally while taking enough pain killer to knock most people out.

I wear a 50 mcg patch of Fetanyl. Change it every 3 days. Also take Percoset. I function normally. I have a bad back that really went downhill when my mother was dying and I was her main caregiver at home. All that lifting and that was the end of my back. Some days with all of the above I am still in pain. If I go over my percoset prescription which happens when I have bad days I’m SOL cause Pain Mgmt doctor will not prescribe unless it’s been 30 days. It’s not an easy life having a bad back. I also have nerve damage from a pinched nerve in my neck(Fell on ice). Goes down the entire left arm leaving half of my hand numb. It sucks to get old and I’m only 47.

I always liked her. I can't name a song of hers, but I just liked her. That probably makes me superficial, but I've been called much worse things.

I hope she's feeling better.

No insult intended.

One of my co-workers is on that stuff for the same reason. She does not drive but other then that she does the same work as the rest of us. No lifting of course!

We keep an eye on her and when we see a certain look we know that we should suggest that she take the rest of the day off. She is one gritty lady.

I wish you the best.

People make fun of her and of Rush Limbaugh, but until you know what it’s like to live in intractable, chronic pain, you can’t criticize. Most people can’t even imagine the level of pain involved. It’s like childbirth that just goes on and on, with no hope for improvement.

None taken.
I get through the day fine. I have a high tolerance with the meds. I will admit at the end of the week, I just want to collapse. Of course, no one except my sister, who suffers as I do, understands. OTOH, my B/F won’t take an aspirin for a headache worries about me constantly on the meds. But he has seen me try and crawl out of bed in the AM, screaming in pain and he ran for my handbag where I kept my meds. Then he told me to go back to sleep until the pills helped. Most people don’t understand unless they’ve lived through the pain 24/7/365.

If Paula Abdul has RSD she is in serious pain. I have a friend that suffers from RSD. He’s really tough too. Vietnam Vet he’s been shot and bayoneted no problem. RSD big problem. It is considered to be just about the most pain a person can have. I researched it for him. He says that the skin on his hand is so painful that he was wearing a glove so the air moving over it wouldn’t cause pain. The worst part is that you look at his hand and all you see is a bit of redness. You wouldn’t really want this at all.

Fentanyl is a synthetic morphine analog. It is at least 100 times stronger than morphine. My girlfriend used fentanyl before her death to handle severe pain. You can get it as a patch or as a lollipop sponge. It is so powerful that it won’t be prescribed unless you are already on morphine because it might kill you outright. That being the case if she is taking it and it is hard to get she must be in awful pain. If you have pain and if you take the right amount it offsets the pain and you get no euphoria. If you take the same amount without pain you get high from it. That is what causes addiction. Here’s a bit of info I got from the Internet.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSD) is a chronic condition characterized by severe burning pain, pathological changes in bone and skin, excessive sweating, tissue swelling, and extreme sensitivity to touch. The syndrome is a nerve disorder that occurs at the site of an injury (most often to the arms or legs). It occurs especially after injuries from high-velocity impacts such as those from bullets or shrapnel. However, it may occur without apparent injury. One visible sign of RSDS near the site of injury is warm, shiny red skin that later becomes cool and bluish. The pain that patients report is out of proportion to the severity of the injury and gets worse, rather than better, over time. Eventually the joints become stiff from disuse, and the skin, muscles, and bone atrophy. The symptoms of RSD vary in severity and duration. The cause of RSD is unknown. The disorder is unique in that it simultaneously affects the nerves, skin, muscles, blood vessels, and bones. RSD can strike at any age but is more common between the ages of 40 and 60, although the number of RSD cases among adolescents and young adults is increasing.

Methadone is not 80 times stronger than Morphine. The patch they are referring to is a Fentanyl patch, which is 80 times stronger than Morphine. Fentanyl is stronger than Heroin.
