WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- Laura Leiva is a fixture in front of the Palm Beach County courthouse.

For seven years she has been selling hot dogs while studying to be a parlegal.

But the vendors have been told their business is cutting into downtown sandwich shops.

In May they say, they'll be ordered to leave public property and set up somewhere else.

Lauras ready to trade in her cart, but there are no paralegal jobs.

Who can tell if she’s worthy of a job without a picture? TTIWWAP.

That’s the sandwich shop’s problem, isn’t it? Shouldn’t the sandwich shops offer a better deal [quantity, quality, cost] if they want to attract more customers?

I can believe they do cut into sandwich shop business. In the northeast they easily make 50-75K a year. Um, at least that is what they “report”. It's a fairly lucrative business. Many like those "dirty dogs". Permits are typically required but it's still cheaper than renting a store and all the headaches that go with it.

Last year city council double the rent and stop issuing permits. I guess it did not run her off.

Too bad. I put a lot more value on a decent hotdog vendor than I do another paralegal. A good hotdog is harder to come by than another “legal professional”. I also agree that the success of the vendors is the problem for the deli owners. Offer a better product at a reasonable price.

Because the vendors are meeting a need better than the downtown sandwich shops. Tough crap to the downtown sandwich shops.

How can you tell when it’s spring in New York City?

Hot dog vendors change their water.

I'm sure permits are needed everywhere but having experience in restaraunts I coudn't figure out how they maintained a record of control of the food.

When I checked into starting my own stand in California I found that usually the answer is to pay a restaraunt or store to store your food items in their own permitted and inspected refrigeration units in between shifts and maintaining good records.

Wow... wonder how these “downtown sandwich shops” got this sweetheart legal monopoly... somebodies in the govt. must be getting their palms greased.

With a vendor you can grab a couple of quick dogs and don’t have to sit and wait for a waitress..
