Oh, milk chocolate. Wherefore art thou?
Apparently not in some Hersheys products that contained milk chocolate for years, and that has passionate chocolate aficionados fighting mad.
Products such as Whatchamacallit, Milk Duds, Mr. Goodbar and Krackel no longer have milk chocolate coatings, and Hersheys Kissables are now labeled chocolate candy instead of milk chocolate.
Whats going on here? On Friday, TODAY consumer correspondent Janice Lieberman reported that Hersheys has switched to less expensive ingredients in several of its products. In particular, cocoa butter the ingredient famous for giving chocolate its creamy, melt-in-your-mouth texture has been replaced with vegetable oil.
The removal of cocoa butter violates the U.S. Food and Drug Administrations definition of milk chocolate, so subtle changes have appeared on the labels of the Hersheys products with altered recipes. Products once labeled milk chocolate now say chocolate candy, made with chocolate or chocolatey.
Some say the label changes are too difficult to spot.
A lot of people dont notice it. The package looks exactly the same, said Cybele May, who has chronicled the changes in detail on her Candy Blog. I feel betrayed by Hersheys. Theyre giving me an inferior product and theyre not even telling me
I call it mockolate, which is basically a fake chocolate product.
Crunched by rising costs In a statement, Hersheys told TODAY that consumers love its products and all its candies are clearly labeled. It still offers real milk chocolate in Hersheys Kisses, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups and its classic chocolate bar.
And recently it put back the milk chocolate in Almond Joy because consumers complained, Lieberman said Friday in her report.
Experts say that while many manufacturers cope with higher costs by increasing their prices or reducing their product sizes, Hersheys change was meant to be ... [snip]

I remember when chocolate syrup was really true chocolate syrup. Also cocoa powder was the real thing and when you made cocoa with it, the flavor was intense. Not at all like the fake cocoa.
A most handsome fella :)

Some of the best times I’ve had involved a good wine and chocolate. ;-P
Thanks ... dumbest dog we ever owned among many, many Labs ... but sure could strike a pose.
Big suprise, they shut down their US plant and move it over the border and then change to crap products... enjoy the kidneystones.
To die for....
Also there is Scharfenberger Chocolate out of California but I think Hersheys bought them out... Too bad!
Hershey’s Syrup - with “Genuine Chocolate Flavor”
is made with High Fructose Corn Syrup.
Nestle Nesquik bills itself as Chocolate Syrup and
is made with Sugar.
They sell Toblerone at base commissaries.
“I bet Sears Roebuck was a different company back then..I just took a job there, and their training is filled with PC gobbledy-gook!”
Well yes, it’s not 1958 anymore unfortunately.
You haven't been able to get a real Coke in over 20 years (unless you get some of the grey market Mexican ones that have started hitting the stores). At least there are a couple of bottlers who still make real Dr Pepper.
I’ve heard of him .... Calgary, eh? But unless it is mass marketed ... I don’t get to the metros often enough to get to appreciate such luxuries.
I live overseas, and coke with sugar apparently still is the norm in much of the world. It is very distinct from the so-called coke classic.
That said, I am under the impression the actual formula (aside from the sweetener) has changed as well over the last decade internationally.
I have not bought HERSHEYS chocolate for years. There is so much wax in their chocolate it is like eating candle wax. I only buy SYMPHONY bars. Yes they are now owned by HERSHEYS co but they did not used to be. They were so much better than HERSHEYS wax fax chocolate that HERSHEYS bought them out and kept the recipe the same. WALMART sells a half a pound bar of SYMPHONY chocolate and it is ... scrumptious.
It’s been this way for some time. Very little “cheap” candy has any real chocolate in it.
Pay a little more and get the good stuff.
I seem to recall reading that Hersheys production had moved to Mexico, sometime last year...
