Stanton Friedman in some of his talks and writings mentiones things that were not even rumored for 50 years or so until the last 5-10 years' release of documents have disclosed.

Sure, in the UFO field, plenty of things have been rumored, deliberately leaked; mixed with calculated disinformation and seeded, leaked etc. etc. etc. But that's not really what you were claiming.
My father worked in top secret crypto. He told me about the number of pilots who were killed chasing ufo's in the 60's.
Their families were never told what really happened and only the ones in the military who had a need to know were aware of it.

Keeping an intellectual secret is far easier than keeping a physical secret. An intellectual secret is just in your head and on some documents in a safe or a safe room.
A physical secret requires somehow keeping all the laborers sworn to secrecy about what they have built. The Manhattan Project, the underground presidential bunker in Colorado, Area 51, the new "secret" base in Utah, the various "secret" bases around the country for spy sattelite communications, the "secret" anti-aircraft missle batteries at the White House, etc. These are all examples of poorly kept physical secrets. Anyone who wants to know a bit about them can, because its impossible to keep the mouths of thousands of laborers shut.
