Duke University Scholars
One-track minds need not apply
Herald-Sun, The (Durham, NC)
November 21, 1999
Author: JENNIFER CHORPENING The Herald-Sun
Estimated printed pages: 6

They aren't your average Duke students, not that any student at this school - where two-thirds of the freshmen from high schools with class rankings graduated in their top 10 - is particularly average.
Still, the University Scholars embody what the administration wishes every student could be: exceptionally smart. Academically interested. Interdisciplinary oriented.

The first 18 "Unis," as they are called, started this semester, chosen for the scholarship group based on academic merit, as well as financial need, said Cathy Davidson, vice provost for interdisciplinary studies.

But beyond that, the university was looking for students who think beyond academic labels. Instead of defining themselves as anthropology or psychology majors, their response to a query about what they study is more likely to be, "Why do people behave like they do?" or, "How do biological organisms adapt to their environments?"

Or a visiting prof can be someone that Duke does not want on a tenure track. For example they would be the spouse of an important Duke tenured faculty member or the spouse equivalent. Thus while Duke does not have a long run slot for them, Duke can employ them for six or seven years as a visitor without having to later vote on them for tenure.

True enough. And a wrench can be used as a hammer, but that's not really the right tool for the job.

In a perfect world, Duke should be interviewing professors for 88 new openings for the spring semester....

Not 88 as some have tenure. But certainly some of the 88 need to be terminated for Duke to gather back some respectability.

As someone once reminded me, "Tenure is a guarantee of a job, not of a salary or an office."

I was sitting in a customer lobby, watching the local news this morning. The newscaster made sure she mentioned that the baby was born some "9 months after the incident" to plant that thought into the viewers' minds. I despise the local media!

Sorry if this has been posted upthread. Speaking if Kimberly's background, this interesting post was on LS:

Here is an exercise for the reader that can help you understand Prof. Kim's need to be relevant to someone.

It appears her "research" is relevant to almost no one.

Go to: http://scholar.google.com

and search on Kimberley Curtis

You will see there is more than one person with that name, but you can spot her papers (hint: they match her CV at http://fds.duke.edu/db/aas/PoliticalScience/faculty/kcurtis )

Now one of the beautiful features of this service of google is that it gives links to referreed publications AND includes the number of "citations," that is, the number of times other published authors cite one's work as the basis for their own.

What do you see? Her published works (of which there are not many) are hardly cited by anyone, if anyone.

(by comparison, search on someone like Jeff Vitter and you see hundreds of citations).

So, since she can't get a real job, and Duke needs a pocket radical feminazi, she is tolerated and allowed to teach a course or two. Apparently not well. So every semester she picks on the athletes or ROTC and goes out of her way to assert her relevance.

Once you realize she is irrelevant, you can move on and just ignore her. I wonder how poorly the Gang of 88 reflect on Duke in general. Would make for an interesting "study."

Mike

heh, heh, heh!

True enough, but more true is tenure is a guarantee of a job and a salary, but not an office, teaching assignment nor and future salary increases.

Limbaugh mentioning the lawsuit against Kim Curtis and Duke.

Jeez. Gun shots reported to police from the complex at 8 am, but the body isn't "discovered" until 10 am? What the the police doing for two hours? Maybe they were at the local donut shop.

Gun shots in Durham are such a normal part of life that it doesn't require investigations any more. Have another donut, cops!

It's sad, and this should be interesting, but I have a feeling we won't be provided with much news about it.

Understood. In CA, it's gone way past "women" as a protected class; probably here, also in the state of NC. It's based on the "fer" system.

A one-fer: Female
A two-fer: Female and minority
A three-fer: Female, minority, lesbian
A four-fer: Female; minority, lesbian, disabled;

And they are in progress (in CA, now) on a five-fer: Female; minority, lesbian; disabled; transgendered

4 points gets more wins in the "grievance elite" circus than a one-fer: Rainforest math is a byproduct of the "diversity pinwheel" come to town.

Speaking about the scarcity of registered Republicans in academia, Davidson joked that universities should strive to recruit Republicans to the humanities earlier in life by offering "programs for affluent, gated communities, so baby Republicans can learn the joy of the classics."

Bitch!

Nah... the AA students get to call in the "brothers" who march and chant "death to whitey" on campus. It's a fashion trend, so its hokay...

That would be unreal. This is getting a snowball effect, isn't it?

Duke is being sued for breach of contract and unjust enrichment. Curtis and Duke are being sued for fraud, negligent misrepresentation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and punitive damages. For all but one of those claims the lawsuit states that the plaintiffs were damaged in excess of $10,000.

I suspect MORE crap is going to hit the fan.

"Social disaster" refers to complex power arrangements that underpin even minor events and give those events symbolic (and disturbing) meaning for society as a whole.

So who has the power here? Could it be the people who used this "minor event" to blow it into a world wide scandal and bring the scutiny of the entire world into the dark hall of Duke?
