Hoemgren's Fine Whine Unacceptable
Pittsburgh Tribune Review ^ | February 8, 2006 | Mike Prisuta

Posted on 02/08/2006 10:43:11 AM PST by TheClintons-STILLAnti-American

Turns out Mike Holmgren lost respect, as well as the NFL championship at Super Bowl XL by insisting that officiating was a factor in the Seahawks' 21-10 loss to the Steelers. Holmgren's better than that.

As a veteran NFL coach, he at least ought to be held to a higher standard.

Sadly, Holmgren pointed the finger instead of the thumb.

Although I don't believe in living in the past or the inordinate importance many people place on sports, I thought this perspective was worth adding to the fine whine regarding Sunday's game. If it was already posted, I apologize in advance, but I DID search and didn't find it.

A coach should never verbalize this, he should merely congratulate the winners, admit that soem calls did not go their way but say "you gotta overcome that and win the game". His clock management had as much to do with the loss as the bad calls.

Too bad he's spoiled his reputation.

He should be able to speak his mind. It was obvious to all except for Steelers fans than every benefit of the doubt went the Steelers direction.

So sports writers in Pittsburgh think that Hoemgren is being a crybaby, and the Steelers won fair and square? There's a revelation.

Yeah the officials did your kicking and managed the clock for you. The Steelers "D" holding your high powered offense to 10 points was luck I guess.

Seattle has become the Whine Capital of America. There appears to be a national obsession now for losers to whine ever since Gore' 00. It really is embarrassing.

It WAS a "factor". Does the author deny this? 11 points. 173 yards off questionable penalties. You have to be an imbicile not to consider that a "factor".

Kicker Josh Brown missed 50- and 54-yard field goal attempts (accuracy rather than distance was the issue in both instances).

On this particular point the author displays complete ignorance about the kicking in football. Distance is ALWAYS the issue on a long field goal attempt -- even if the kicker has gotten plenty of distance on the kick and missed wide to either side. The goalposts appear closer together from a longer distance, and even a kicker who is capable of hitting a 60-yard field goal will use different mechanics for a 50-yard attempt than for a 30-yard attempt.

The Seahawks were robbed, plain and simple. The officiating was atrocious. Penalties should never be the focus of post game commentary. The officials put themselves in the middle of the game, ultimately changing the momentum of the game and causing many to question if the fix was in. It was bad, bad, bad officiating.

That's kind of amusing: A Pittsburgh columnist whining about a Seattle coach whining. Maybe Pittsburgh supporters are as much sore winners as Seattle supporters are sore losers...

I thought the officiating was questionable at best, and certainly substandard for a Superbowl game. Was this the best crew of officials the NFL could field? It tarnishes somewhat the Steeler's victory, and they will just have to live with that. But on the other hand I'm sure they will find that preferable to the alternative. Being the Superbowl champions makes up for any carping which might accompany it.

Why can't they just let it be that Pittsburgh won and Seattle lost, and be done with it? There's no shame in trying your best and losing, even if some of the calls didn't go your way. Pittsburgh just made the plays when they had to and found a way to win. They got hot late in the season and steamrolled through the playoffs, beating good teams on the road, clobbering some but finding a way to win the close ones. If they're classy the Steelers will be gracious and humble in victory, knowing it could have easily gone the other way. Likewise, the 'Hawks just have to admit that they got beat in one game and suck it up. Geez, I mean, it's a sporting event, nobody died or anything.

It looked like the Seahawks were shoe-ins when they completely dominated the game early and built up that seemingly insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Sadly, CBS radio and ABC Sports agreed.

No freedom of speech in the NFL eh?
