*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good morning all.

Estrogen's place is fabulous!

I will be gone the month of June for family reunions and a weddingup in Missouri. Leaving the horses and the donkey on grass down here in Texas. Hope you all have a great June. I'll be checking in occasionally. Lots of driving. Boy will I ever miss my animals. Sam-cat goes to a boarding kennel and Berekely the border collie is traveling with me and neighbors looking after the horses and plants.

I sure hate to leave but family is family.

'You guys talk about the pleasure horses, the halter horses are the ones that get me. Some are so massive, that they could never be ridden. I love a nice stocky built, but when all they can do it stand, it seems such a waste"

Good morning! You are exactly right in this assessment and the breeders are starting to realize what they've done. The halter paint horse guy down the street from me was on the cover of the Paint Horse Journal and in the article, he was expressing sadness about how the halter horse industry has bred horses that are basically useless, except to look pretty. He never did say exactly why they can't be ridden and I honestly don't know. Is it because they are just too round to fit a saddle to? He did say he's trying to get breeders to change what they are breeding for but I'm guessing that's going to be a losing battle. This is one of those cases where everybody thinks, "if a little muscle is good, then massive muscles are even better!"

Pictures on post 615, is that where you live?? It's gorgeous and that cabin is awesome. Beautiful barn, too.

Speaking of chickens, yesterday I was at the barn cleaning and I look up and see my black lab running past with something in her mouth. I jumped up to see what it was and she had my little bantam rooster in her mouth and it was dead. I could just kill that stoopid dog. The rooster got out of the pen somehow, he's so tiny he could squeeze through the smallest hole.

I have been under the impression the reason halter horses were unuseable is because of their very tiny feet, and massive body size. Makes them very prone to lameness. Hard to keep them sound.

No, this started out as my husband's hunting cabin and just got out of hand. When I bought my horse it really became more than a hunting cabin. We live about 2 hrs. from the cabin and spend as much time as we can down there. My husband is retired so he's down there a lot. When I retire in 3 yrs. we'll decide then if we will spend half a yr. there and 1/2 yr up here. Don't know yet...

We are leaving tomorrow morning. The clinic does not start till Fri. They have limited amounts of RV hook ups and we want to be sure to get 2. One for our RV, and one for the horse trailer we are taking. Mine and Jenny's family will sleep in the RV, and My son and his wife and JP will sleep in the trailer. It has AC in the front compartment, and the babies crib will be set up in the bottom, and the Charlie and Kris, can sleep in the gooseneck. It will be nice that the horses have a day to acclimate. I hope we can ride them a bit on Thrus. but I'm not sure if that will be allowed.

Becky

What did I just read?! YOU are looking at a NEW truck? My goodness gracious, what has gotten into you. I thought everything you drove had to be at least 50 years old. ;o) I'm almost as bad though so I've got no room to talk.

Somebody was asking where you get these goofy fly masks. This one was a gift from a friend. She e-mailed me the address; www.wildhorse.com if you want to look at them. They are funny!

LOL! He'll need a big one then coz some of those old trucks are HUGE, plus he'll be hauling big trailer loads of cows and farm equipment.

Well! I'm undecided on whether my pony would survive this rig, but it is interesting!

Everyone, please see the "breaking rig" designed and used by a friend of FrogInAblender. I've never seen anything like it.

Breaking Rig driving

Breaking Rig riding

These are video clips... if you are on a slow connection, you will be better off to download them to your own computer rather than trying to stream them.

To download it, right click it and select "Save target as..." and put it on your desktop. It may take a minute to many minutes to download depending on your connection, but once it's there it will play normally!

It's worth a look!

Well! That is an amazing home-made appliance there.

Even the most determined horse would be hard put to rear up, run, or lay down in that (of course, getting him IN to it in the first place might be more fun than we want).

I am not a harness horse person - I have only harnessed a pony and driven him ONCE - and somebody who knew what they were doing was helping me!

I drove my stallion, in Arab shows... and Arabian Stallions Driving class in an arena that suddenly seems very cramped is an exhilerating experience!

I'll grant that driving can be really neat. If there were someplace around here where it would be safe to drive down the road and see things, it'd be neat... but only with a really bomb-proof horse... Being strapped to a panicked horse in a cart is a terrifying prospect.

I guess that guy does have brakes on the rig, so if he has one that just runs, he can drag them to a stop, or apply partial brake to wear them out.
