The Guild 7-22-2004 Revenge on the Chatty Cathy crowd
PageSix/Gawker.com

July 21, 2004 -- SOME classical music lovers became so annoyed with the yammering of a group sitting next to them during a free concert in Central Park Monday night, they stole a woman's sandal. "We got to the Great Lawn at 5:30 and scored a nice spot on the ballfield. It was a perfect evening of wine and good weather. However, at 8 p.m., this posse of stupid people showed up," one perpetrator e-mailed Gawker.com, along with a picture of the purloined pump. "The 12 of them proceeded to make the [classical concert] the background music for their chatter about jobs in publishing and 'media buys' and the Hamptons. This went on for two-plus hours . . . So when the Grucci fireworks were over, we quietly rolled up our blanket, careful to snag a lone shoe. At least one b- - - - would hobble out of the park [that] night."

From Gawker.com:

The Shoe

Is this your shoe? If so, that means you were in Central Park last night, blabbing about the Hamptons and your publishing job during the free concert. The nice strangers next to you stole one of your shoes because you don't know when the hell to shut up.

Walking home barefoot in New York? The cohorts of the now 'light one shoe' yakker probably had to listen to lots of fussing all the way home. A brutal yet delicious way to send a message to the yakkers.

LOL, great idea. There is nothing more annoying than sitting through a concert or a movie by someone who doesn't know when to shut their mouths.

Cindy Adams reports:

I am staring at an announcement inviting "Friends and Supporters in Honoring Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. OK by me. He's a good person. I just think a U.S. Senator's invitation shouldn't misspell. It says, On the "Occassion of the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Good idie.

He must of plagiarized because he can't spell! Bless his heart.

Her remaining shoe will serve as a reminder to be more considerate in the future, or at the very least, to keep her shoes on her feet at all times.

This story is delicious, but that is one nasty, dirty sandal. I wouldn't touch it with gloves.

Indeed. I'm no germophobe, but would be a bit hesitant to touch some Hamptons socialite's sandal - those girls aren't known for their restraint, and who knows where that shoe has been?

Speaking of lifestyles of the rich and bizarre:

THE power-moguls and political heavyweights now luxuriating at ultra-exclusive retreat Bohemian Grove are unaware that they're being waited on hand-and-foot by a famous gay porn star. We're told that "Chad Savage," who has appeared in such carnal classics as "How the West Was Hung," is supplementing his sex job by working as a valet at Bohemian Grove, the all-male annual gathering inside a 2,700-acre redwood forest in Monte Rio, Calif., that has been attended by every Republican president since Calvin Coolidge, as well as by industrial titans and media magnates.

"All of us valets in the Grove are tittering about it," says our Bohemian blabbermouth. "To think there's all these powerful conservative guys having their drinks and food served to them by a gay porn star. He makes their beds and attends to their every need — and they have no idea who he really is."

Bigwigs who have attended the two-week retreat include George H.W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Alan Greenspan, Walter Cronkite, Newt Gingrich, Alexander Haig, Jack Kemp, Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell, John Major, William F. Buckley, and former C.I.A. director William Casey.

Savage is at the Grove under his real name — which we wouldn't reveal to Grove spokesman Sam Singer, because we didn't want the valet to lose his job. But Singer said the club didn't care about his past. "All that matters is that the valets do good service," he said. "That's really all that matters."

Savage sure knows how to provide "service." When he starred in "How the West Was Hung" in 1999, one reviewer wrote that he wore a "beatific grin" while engaging in an orgy, and added that his "youthful enthusiasm is entirely winning."

When they're not listening to policy speeches, "Bohos" are known to urinate freely in the redwoods and perform mock-druidic rituals that revolve around a 40-foot-tall stone owl. In one ritual, called "Cremation of Care," members wearing red-hooded robes cremate a coffin effigy of "Dull Care" at the base of the owl altar.

While the club has claimed its share of accomplishments — Grovers privately boast that the Manhattan Project to develop the atom bomb was conceived on its grounds — its oddball activities aren't for everyone. Richard Nixon once famously described the gathering as "the most faggy goddamned thing you could ever imagine." (Page Six)

How did Walter Cronkite get included in that bunch of Republican movers and shakers?

The Democrats prove, again, that they are the party of real substance:

Look for Ben Affleck to address the Democratic Convention Tuesday night in Boston. The local boy's rep confirms, "We're finalizing details now." (NY Daily News)

But that doesn't mean they'll stick by their celebrity backers if they become too conroversial:

Margaret (Cho) has been Whoopi'd. The potty-mouthed comedian has been cut from a gay political bash coinciding with the Democratic convention. Apparently, its John Kerry-friendly organizers are worried that her racy routine will become more fodder for Republicans who have been trying to label the Massachusetts senator the candidate of Hollywood values instead of family values. rest of story

How did Walter Cronkite get included in that bunch of Republican movers and shakers?

Good question.

Can you explain this for me, from the WashPost

Berger has known for months that he was in potential jeopardy. Breuer was hired in October, and in January former White House press secretary Joe Lockhart was enlisted to remain on standby if a public controversy blossomed. But Berger allies said he did not inform Kerry because he had resolved to work privately with Justice Department officials, and received assurances that these officials would treat the matter confidentially.

Does that mean DOJ aked him to keep it quiet or is that the slick willie way of saying he asked DOJ to keep quiet?

It's astounding how Berger remained a top Kerry adviser, testifies before the commission and does talk shows and what not, all the while keeping quiet about the investigation.

I was just watching Kerry giving his speech here in Detroit. Looks like Nantucket also included some nip n' tuck on his face. What are they doing to him?

Bush will speaking at the Urban League tomorrow.

The reason I couldn't find this in the WP story is because I read it elsewhere. Why wouldn't the WP include this important piece of information?

"He was supposed to be monitored at all times but kept asking the monitor to leave so he could make private calls," a senior law enforcement source told the Daily News.

More info not included in the WP story:

Berger also took "lots of bathroom breaks" that apparently aroused some suspicion, the source added.

It is standard security procedure to constantly monitor anyone with a security clearance who examines the type of code-word classified files stored in the underground archives vault in the building where tourists view the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Asked if guards left Berger alone in the classified reading room while he made calls, archives spokeswoman Susan Cooper replied, "I'm not going to say I haven't heard that."

The same archives monitors told the FBI that Berger was observed stuffing his socks with handwritten notes about files he reviewed that were going to the Sept. 11 panel. It is prohibited to make notes about the secret files and leave with them without special approval.

"Stuffed socks and pockets is real," the senior law enforcement official said. "The (theft) was reported by the guards." Link

The record of Berger's cell phone calls for that day will be very interesting.

From the New Republic of all places:

I confess: I do not like Sandy Berger; and I have not liked him since the first time we met, long ago during the McGovern campaign, not because of his politics since I more or less shared them then, but for his hauteur. He clearly still has McGovernite politics, which means, in my mind, at least, that he believes there is no international dispute that can't be solved by the U.S. walking away from it. No matter.

...he has had ambitions tied to John Kerry's, ambitions that clash with those of Richard Holbrooke and Joe Biden, who decisively do not have McGovernite politics. But Berger did run the Kerry foreign policy team at the writing of the Democratic Party platform a few weeks ago (when the only opposition, easily pacified, came from a handful of Dennis Kucinich loyalists) and has been deeply involved in crafting how the candidate presents himself on these issues.

Effin' tells Tom Brokaw "he didn't have a clue."

There's so much CYAin' going on there must be a mighty wind blowing around DC this week.

I have been watching Shiny Happy Kerry this morning and can say with certainty that not only has been re-botoxed, he has had a serious chemical peel and that's why he is so smooth and shiny.

I so want to punch him. He's such a phoney.
