Moving from one state to another is the first step in this migration. The next step is "moving in place", where (as an example) most of Illinois is separated from the Chicago metro area and turns red/conservative/traditional.

You'd probably have to separate from the St. Louis metro area as well. And put far NW Indiana in with Chicago metro. So the red/conservative/traditional areas would occupy most of the land mass, while the blue/liberal/progressive areas would have heavy population density and much less land area.
