Video footage on Tuesday emerged showing the moment when plainclothes Chicago police officers unloaded nearly 100 gunshots during a traffic stop last month, killing a man and subsequently leading to negative anti-cop coverage. However, the narrative of police killing an innocent man runs counter to the facts.
As the New York Post reported, 26-year-old Dexter Reed was killed during a March 21 traffic stop in Humboldt Park on West Ferdinand Street after officers in an unmarked cop car pulled him over for failing to wear a seatbelt.
The wild footage opens with a female officer and four others approaching Reed’s vehicle while he rolls down the window. But he refuses to exit his SUV despite the policewoman angrily ordering him to do so several times.
The officers then back up, and a major shootout subsequently erupts, sending her scrambling.
“Shots fired! Shots fired!” the female officer yells. “Alert the neighbors!”
She and her fellow officers then fire several more bullets before stopping.

In neighborhoods like this one “jump out” squads are common. A traffic violation gives them cause to stop, and then check for warrants, guns, drugs, etc….

They had a tip about the dude and they needed something like probable cause to make contact. So...seat belt violation. It’s sketchy, but it’s done a lot. And usually with a great deal of success.

yep, no way that multiple cars of police pulled this guy over for a seatbelt. There is more to the story. And I am not blaming the cops at all in saying that.

Think about the caliber of people who wany to be a cop in that s#ithole, given Kim Foxx as SA who fails to prosecute and mayors who are feckless fools. Especially after Saint Floyd...
It’s NEVER about the seatbelt. They use that to stop you, and once you’re stopped they look in your car (and smell you and your car) to see if they can find anything else. The traffic stop is the gateway. (They admit as much).
(Full Disclosure, I watch a lot of Cops, and I’m not anti-cop).

I’m retired Law Enforcement. I never worked in a Big City, so this may not be transferable information, but where I worked (Rural & Small Cities) we were not allowed to do traffic enforcement unless in uniform. Perhaps Chicago does things differently.
I thought Chicago passed some pretty crazy regulations for Police/public interactions.
I thought:
No One was to be pulled over for any violations such as:
Tail Lights
Registration sticker
seat belt
headlight
etc...
What more needs to be said?

four cops shot 91 rds. four emptied their mags and one or two of them changed mags and fired a few more rds.
