I even got a telescope for Christmas and I still couldn't find the darn thing up there in the sky. Probably because it was a cheap telescope. My parents didn't have a lot of money but I'd rather have gotten a Flexible Flyer sled. I did get my first transistor radio that year, one of those Radio Shack handhelds that only pulled in the AM stations but at least that gave me a lot of hours of use before I ruined it at the beach in the summer of '74.
I saw Comet Kohoutek pretty clearly without a telescope or binoculars in the early dawn sky in 1973. I was 23 at the time and was in Death Valley with non-polluted clear skies.
-I remember Comet Kohoutek. What a letdown that was.-
I remember Comet Kohoutek but it wasn’t a letdown.
I had just meet my future wife and convinced her to stay awake all night to see the comet.I told her it was a once in a life time moment that can’t be missed.
We didn’t see the comet but we were married soon after, 50 years ago. It was a once in the life time moment. :)
A friend and I climbed up a water tower.
By the time it was supposed to be visible we had full cloud cover.
Bummer. But as you said, it was a bust anyway.
