“The media has always been as much propaganda as news.”

*************

I think the propaganda, lies, omissions and proselytizing have been amped up to levels never seen previously in this country, at least in recent times. Ideology and the selective use of facts pervades every single subject covered today. While bias has always been present to one degree or another in the media, there was usually some effort made to avoid appearing to be totally one sided. They don’t even try to soften or hide their contempt and vitriol for opposing views anymore.

The “news” business has an openly visceral tone to it these days. Its all opinion and their ideologues don’t give a wit about losing their credibility. Nor do they give a damn how it effects the relatively free flow of information that is essential to our democracy.

Several points:

- Gosh, I notice lots of independent news sources are flourishing. Substack and Locals for example both have lively newsgroups that provide enough funding to employ their independent journalists.

- Tim Pool, Dave Rubin, Megyn Kelly, Podcast of the Lotus Eaters, Russell Brand, the Daily Wire, The Epoch Times, Tucker Carlson, Jack Posobiec, and many many more are thriving. Pollutico calls them “opinionated”. What the hell do they think the corporate media is? What the hell do they think they are? Sure independent sources will have their own views and biases. The key is to listen to a few of them and get a more well rounded perspective that way rather than relying on one giant corporate media source.

There will always be a market for news and commentary. Its just that people no longer trust the corporate media to provide it. They flushed their credibility down the toilet a long time ago.

- They say “democracy” will not do as well when the “watchdogs” are gone....yet the corporate media went from being the Establishment’s watchdogs to being the Establishment’s lapdogs a long time ago.

They miss the good old days of monopoly control of the news when people had no alternatives to the big dailies, AP and UPI, ABC, CBS and NBC.

Bingo! Some have even blurted it out recently. They are mad that they no longer control the narrative. They no longer get to decide what is "news" and what isn't and they no longer get to have theirs be the only spin put on the news.

The answer to this down swing is Trump. If Trump becomes president these news agencies will prosper. Vote Trump, save the news industry!

Maybe you’re pissed off by all the fake news, biased media coverage (doesn’t matter if left or right), or the never-ending narrative of we’re all doomed and will die tomorrow.

Is it time to give up on old news?

I Stopped Watching News 6 Years Ago — Here’s Why You Should Quit, Too! No, you won’t miss anything “important.”

Moreno Zugaro Age of Awareness

I never understood why people watched the news.

When I was a kid, they were on every evening after dinner. It was always the same-old, same-old. Some politicians fought about some law, some terrorists wanted to blow up some city, and some natural disaster plagued some country. Yawn.

At one point, I didn’t buy into the hype of the world is ending anymore. It’s completely wrong anyway. If you look at the facts on a global scale, life for humans is better than it has ever been before.

When I moved out, I started an experiment — and stopped watching the news altogether. I sold my TV, blocked websites, ignored newspapers, and unfollowed Instagram accounts. That was six years ago.

You might’ve toyed with the same thought as well.

Maybe you’re pissed off by all the fake news, biased media coverage (doesn’t matter if left or right), or the never-ending narrative of we’re all doomed and will die tomorrow.

There are a bunch of reasons to close the curtain on the whole circus.

Your mood will improve tremendously. You’ll have a lot more time since you won’t be caught up in the negativity spiral, disaster, and constant worries anymore. Overall, your life will get better on almost every conceivable level.

And the best part: You’ll still know what’s going on.

Well said. The lapdogs are simpatico with their political brethren, but this relationship goes beyond that. It is also a symbiotic one where favorable coverage by the media begets more inside tips and scoops from friendly politicos. They scratch each other’s backs, so to speak.

(BTW this entire thread is a particularly interesting one that should be read by any aspiring journalists who may still care about professionalism and integrity.)

I quit in summer 1969. I went to college that fall. Dad used to watch the news on TV and the family would join him. I used to read the newspaper pretty thoroughly. When I was a freshman, I took a required “Engineering Economics” class which required a subscription to the Wall Street Journal. That’s when I began finding differing (and conservative) opinions on the Editorial Page and learning about liberal news in print and on the air. The Editorial Page eventually lost its way (as did the rest of the WSJ) and I dropped that subscription.

The Internet and rapid rise of other, conservative sources clinched the deal — no more liberal mass media for me, ever.

Like late night “comedians” who now pitch “political comedy”

I don't watch TV at all, and in the rare times that I do, it's a Hockey or Baseball game ... but one time a few years ago (after a hockey game) I watched the opening monologue of some late night talk show. It might have been Jimmy Fallon or whoever (I really don't know, since I never watch, so I don't know who is who) ... but anyway, his monologue was a bunch of lame jokes with (then President) Donald Trump as the punchline. Every single one of 'em ... stoopit jokes which weren't even funny, and then iterating Trump as the punchline. The audience guffawing uproariously like a bunch of Lemmings.

Ridiculous.

It's a shame how badly the media has served us.

A free press is a cornerstone of a free society.

Unfortunately our media has become a tool of the oppressive government, much like how Pravda and Tass loyally served the Communist Soviet government back in the Cold War days.

Isn’t it interesting how Woke Politico has failed to notice that it’s the most woke who go the fastest broke. They need to take their woke colored glasses off and notice there’s a market out here for the truth.

There is enough free news on the internet that most people won’t pay much for subscriptions.

Revenue from classified ads went away with Craig’s List, eBay, ETSY and so forth.

Revenue from official notices has declined as they can be published on other web sites for less.

Advertisers have shifted ad dollars to Google and Amazon, etc.

So “news” is mainly supported by rich people with a point of view, political organizations, non-profit advocacy groups, etc. These groups are not concerned with traditional objectivity and journalism standards.

I/Grampa Dave stopped watching tv fake news after 9/11 and the immediate B$ that followed and posed as news.

I had cancelled most of the written B$ before 9/11.

The Lying Liberal Media never, EVER stops lying. Only partial stories concocted to deceive. Lying is built in to their very nature.

You have to remember everything you read by the mainstream media is the propaganda they want you to believe.

But how do you square that circle with being on FR? You get your daily firehose of all the world’s bad news right here.
