A very wide bridge with many, many lanes. But they only go in one direction.

Socialism is implemented to bring about full blown communism, its an intermediate stage, the transition stage, to communism.

At least thats how the socialist leaders frame their oligarchy. They know communism will never come about so the ruling socialist elite will remain in power forever as they will always be needed to guide the process.
