If not done carefully, it could give Putin the excuse to go nuclear, or a general mobilization. On the other hand, carefully targeting specific military targets like railroad marshalling yards, military supplies, and key bridges if there are some would be good, perhaps from Ukraine with long range target acquisition missiles and drone spotting over the city. Great care to avoid collateral damage to civilians would show the difference between the Ukrainians and the murderous Orks. Perhaps timed for when Putin is in surgery?
Russia and China cannot develop a strong NCO system. That requires independent thought which is exactly what these dictatorships cannot allow if they want to survive.
Regardless of what Ukraine decides to do here Belgorod is critical and vulnerable and it is a legitimate target.

The UA knows full well the Russian policy is to use nuclear weapons if it invaded and attacked even by conventional weapons. For a country that cannot yet reclaim a significant portion of its own country due to lack of small arms, ammo and kit, attacking another country is sheer folly - but since both military commands are poor, expect blunders.

You type “Ukraine” as if NATO is making the tactical decisions and supplying their military weapons.
And you type as if your head is inspecting your own colon.
Ukraine's goals are driving the Russia military out of its territory and heading off future invasion attempts. This is why taking back Crimea is a possibility. Attacking Russian territory will not help accomplish these goals.
Under Russian law only an attack on Russian soil is legal justification for a full mobilization. A Russian military operation outside of Russia territory provoking a attack on Russian soil is irrelevant here. Trying to capture Belgorod would give Putin political cover for all his mistakes and give him what he needs to escalate the war.
Inside the Russian government there is no real opposition to Putin's expansionist policies. The entire Russian Federal legislature backed seizing Ukraine. As long as there is no real threat to Russian borders, a full mobilization would trigger real opposition to Putin. Attacking Belgorod would give Putin and his allies a rallying cry to use to justify whatever they want.
