Not quite, it’s legal to pay for their likeness. That was wrong too. That’s not what this is about. This is a bit more than likeness and goes into performance.

the only people legally paying college athletes are private citizens who willingly purchase their likenesses and numbers on jerseys and such; royalties, if you will...nothing untoward about that at all...
the transfer portal was along time coming; these athletes have four or five years to make their mark in the athletic world, and pursue a career, however unlikely, in it; the nonsensical rule of sitting out a year needed to be gone like thirty years ago...
in an ideal world, pro football and basketball would have built their own farm systems as baseball did, and leave the colleges out of the cutthroat realm of recruiting, but, well, they didn’t...

Since we now have “de facto free agency” at the college\university level let’s quit the pretense this has anything to do with scholastics. Its taxpayer supported minor league football. It’s time to lower or remove taxpayer support and make the NFL kingpins subsidize it.

removing taxpayer support does little to change the scene for the profitable sports for the university; wealthy donors, rabid fan bases and television will continue to exist and willingly pay through the nose...
however, the great bulk of athletes competing in non-profitable sports will be greatly harmed by removing the taxpayer support; assuming it could ever be done in the first place...
Good for him, everybody else makes money on college athletes, way past time for them to get paid.
The issue most see is that it’s no longer college football.
If making money makes it no longer college football then it hasn’t been college football for a long long time. It’s now proper. The whole NCAA forced illusion of amateurism was a farce that punished the athletes while everybody else made bank. The idea that a coach can be paid 10s of millions to coach athletes that can lose their eligibility if someone comps their dinner is morally reprehensible. That system had to end. Should have ended a long time ago. 30 odd years ago the Olympics realized the illusion of amateurism was silly. I’m glad college sports is being forced to catch up.
The state taxpayers could choose to continue to subsidize the ‘minor (mostly unwatched sports!)’ sports if they so desire. They also could be covered as part of a license agreement with the NFL kingpins to continue to use the college\university name.
Yes, I know this has nothing to do with education. Thanks for pointing that out. The state taxpayer who is told he\she is funding higher education should be funding higher education not entertainment. The wealthy donors can continue to donate to these NFL subsidized teams who license from the ‘Whats-a-matta Us & colleges’ across the land if they wish. The rabid fan base & television will follow the game however it’s funded and wherever it’s played. It’s time to end the hypocrisy of it all. Note same argument for basketball!

Not saying it is but it is a massive change and you can see the results Big $$$ has done and this is just year 1.
The whole college game being turned on it’s head. Granted most players aren’t really affected but it just casts a whole cynical new picture on college football. They are just going to concentrate all the talent into a few programs (won’t even call them schools).
A player who is likely to be drafted should not play in a bowl game unless their team is in the BCS top four teams.
No one cares about the bowl games anymore unless the teams are part of the BCS final four.
