That hasnt been required for years. If you ever hope to use the legal system to protect your works from infringement it is. Most lawyers won't even touch an infringement case without a registered Copyright. As for this Amazon situation, the author wouldn't have this problem at all if they merely sent Amazon the Registration #--they obviously know the author didn't splurge for the $55 registration.
