There was a guy named Jack Sparks who wrote a book called 'The Mindbenders.' It came out in '79/'80. Besides the moonies and a bunch of others, there was an analysis of Jones and the whole Jonestown thing. Jones was VERY involved in Bay Area politics. He was the go-to guy, apparently, if someone wanted the black vote, since his church was predominantly black. He was head of at least one committee for the city of SF. The analysis had Jones setting up a socialist compound in Guyana, with himself as the head. Rejecting the Gospel, he set himself up as god, with Christian songs re-written to show what a great guy and wonderful savior dude Jim Jones was.
The book is out of print. Sadly, Mr. Sparks got into legal trouble with one of the cults he mentioned in 'Mindbenders,' but there is a lot of stuff on the internet about Jones and Jonestown. But yeah, the whole 'we're gonna build a socialist utopia, even if it kills you' is still the mantra of the Dems, whether they admit it or not.
