The author forgot the Hayes/Tilden election. Also a tie is not needed for it to be thrown to the House. If no candidate gets 270 votes it will be thrown to the House. A strong third party candidate could make that happen.

There is not a very good chance that the Electoral College will split evenly on Election Day. As a mathematician and former pollster, I would put the odds at well below 1%. That’s not something we need to worry about.
