You can always change OS if you don’t like how they do.

restore them from a backup or xp machine, rename them to something else like game1,game2 ... or use 7zip and keep them in a zipped file and run them from there.

Those games may have security issues. If Microsoft does not fully own them, it can not update and reinstall them.

In early versions of Windows 10, there were various compatibility modes where you could run legacy apps that weren’t happy with the regular settings. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s been maintained.

Check out “compatibility mode.”

I know its an aggravation, but maybe there’s an easy workaround.

So I just checked. In the latest version of W10, there is a “compatibility troubleshooter”, which you can access either from control panel, or the search function on the task bar.

"I think this is absolutely wrong. I paid for those apps when I bought XP...they are part of the original installation of that OS and they have no right to remove what I paid for. I am beyond being PO'ed."

I don't blame you one bit. This "perpetually belongs to Microsoft" crap is why I dumped them for linux and I have not looked back or missed it one bit. Best thing I ever did and I should have done it much sooner. The MS chain and ball is gone forever. You can also get a freecell clone for linux for free.

But if you want to stick with MS they have a free freecell download for Win 10... But I know that is not the point here. MS and the Win 10 concept has upset a LOT of people.

Windows X - as in your ex-software.

But this is well known.

Could not have said it better. With MS you never do own what you “paid for”, it is forever theirs.

Worth repeating:

It is one thing to not supply my needs and another to destroy what I need. Good riddance windows.

By the way, those weren’t “YOUR” games anyway, they were Microsoft’s. Regardless of what you paid for them, the EULA still applies, and what Microsoft gives, Microsoft can take away, or modify. Try finding Windows Movie Maker, which was a perfectly useful piece of software but which was retired and even if you find an old copy, will not longer run under Windows 10 because they intentionally disabled support for it.

Go search for “PySol Games” - you will find several versions and while no longer being supported this is Free Open Source software distributed under GNU General Public License and contains thousands of card and related games, including hundreds of Mahjongg games, all of which put Microsoft’s to shame.

The solution is not to get mad at Microsoft for being the arrogant bastards they have always been, but to find ways of working around them to do what you want to do.

“Indeed, many of them are cloud-based, which I hate, since it demands an internet connection to run.”

And this is the problem, they took everyone’s computer and turned it into no more than a tablet with apps dependent on an internet connection and cloud subscription. In fact they made it hard for the OS to even work correctly without an internet connection.

It was one of the dirtiest scams I have seen yet.

XP is no longer supported.

What does that mean? I have been using XP (and am still using it to type this right this very moment) and I have been using it for almost two decades.

What sort of "support" should I need? Virus? Don't have a problem with viruses. If I should ever have an actual problem with viruses, i'll just wipe the hard drive and reload XP.

Biggest problem I have is with organizations such as Microsoft deliberate disabling features from people trying to force me to update.

Youtube is an @$$. They are another example of a company disabling features simply to force you to update.

If I ever update, it will be to Linux. Not going to fool with any of the crap Microsoft makes nowadays.

Can you reset your puter to the way it was the day before you allowed the upgrade? Such a move is possible in most cases.

I never used google knowingly, have always used bing or dogpile. I recently started using DDG with my firefox, and can’t believe how good it is. Unfortunately, google is the search engine by default on my android phone. I installed bing on my phone, and use it exclusively for any research, but who knows where google butts in?

Amen. All they want to do is put out superficial "cheese" changes that do not improve anything, and to force you to allow them to control *YOUR* system.

Microsoft can go F*** themselves.

Welcome to “operating system as a service” brought to you by the cloudy, app driven, ‘you no longer own an operating system,’ folks at micro$oft.

Believe all three of those games are self-contained .exe files. Copy them from another computer and copy them to your computer. they should run, and if they were to be kept on cd/dvd/thumbdrive, they could be replaced after every update.

Good luck with win10. It is a nightmare. Updates every 6 months, and having to go in and make sure all the privacy settings have not been reset to factory is a pain in the backside.
