Exactly. The woman grew up moderately well off in a well off neighborhood. BTW, hers was not the only Puerto Rican family there, since most of them are indistinguishable from their non-Puerto Rican neighbors and live the way everybody else does - they send their kids to college, they drive nice cars, they have garbage disposals...
Shes creating a false narrative that is as unfair to the Puerto Rican population as it is to everybody else. Condescending, manipulating, and even insulting.
Maybe the maid kept her out of the kitchen and she just didn’t know there was one in there?
Unless a maid kept her away from the kitchen I can’t imagine her not being familiar with a garbage disposal could possibly be true. I am a baby boomer, and live in the middle of nowhere in an old house. I have honestly never had a garbage disposal but encountered many in my life. Even cheap apartments my daughters rented when in college had garbage disposals. I thought everyone in the country but me had one. I have had little to do with them in my life but even I know the basics of using them. Garbage disposals are certainly not just for the rich as she is trying to play it!!
She sounds like Granny on the Beverly Hillbillies. Wonder if her new apartment has a cement pond?
