Parents, schools react to Trump rollback on school lunches

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — Parents and schools are reacting to the Trump administration's rollback on school lunches.

School lunch menus will be remade nationwide. President Donald Trump rolled-back an Obama-era mandate that required schools to only serve whole-grains, along with more fresh fruits and vegetables. This change affects millions of children.

Cafeteria operators say the mandate made costs higher. But some parents here in Des Moines feel getting rid of the mandate is wrong, and they're not alone.

"I guess it's upsetting or annoying if we're not doing what's best for our kids," said Courtney Starbuck, a parent at Hubbell Elementary in Des Moines, adding that she relies on the school to provide her 7-year-old, Audrey, with a healthy meal. "The schools are just a place I can trust that my daughter is being well cared for, including her health and well-being and nutrition."

Starbuck is not alone. "I want my kids to be having healthy foods. I don't agree with it," Des Moines parent Jessica Styron said.

Des Moines Public schools serve 36,000 meals every day. In a move that surprised parents, the district announced it will continue to *honor the whole-grain mandate.

Don’t like what the school serves?

Pack your kid a lunch

Simple as that

The “whole grain” thing has been debunked.

Such language. It isn’t a rollback. It is a restoration.

What an idiot.

If you want your kid to eat better, be the adult and the parent, and pack your daughter her lunch yourself.

Stop depending on someone to do your job for you.

Amen. Fools on parade, imbibing and regurgitating the leftist creed on demand. Idiot? Way to kind, way too kind. I can think of a few choice words to describe her, but I dare not.....

Well, Courtney Starbuck, it is solely your responsibility to provide your child with healthy meals. By your own comment it looks as if you have failed. And that qualifies you as a bad mother.

There are varied tastes across the U.S. and within states. The reason there are school districts is to provide material structures for the students. Treat meals the same way. Let the school districts determine what they serve children based on location, ethnicity, religion and culture, et al.

When I was a kid the meals were likely unacceptably unhealthy to people like these women but somehow the kids looked healthier than the kids today do. If this woman is actually concerned about her kids diet, she would do well to feed the child herself.

Abolish meals thru schools...just offer snacks...apples, cheese, etc. Parents should provide MEALS.

Great, this is not that hard. Convince your local school system to maintain the Obama lunch requirements, and ante up to pay for it locally. Otherwise, sit down and shut up, we don’t want to hear your whining.

Exactly, it's a school, not a frickin' restaurant.

These Democrat mothers want their kids to be fed grain. Farmers feed their cattle grain to make them gain weight. Then we worry about the childhood obesity problem.
