Well, Barron is safe at St. Andrews, which doesn't field a football team. It's a small school. It has a very active athletic program and tries to be competitive in its leagues, but football requires numbers. I know a couple of families whose boys played football at small private schools that do play the sport. They have to work really, really, really, really hard to find comparably small schools that also play the sport. They drive all over creation to do so, and still have difficulty fleshing out a full schedule. So they end up playing the smallest schools they can find, which are still two or three times bigger. Half the team ends up injured and they get blown out regularly. Chronic mismatches take the fun out of the game. Barron has plenty of other sports to choose from.

The small schools really should try a small-sided version of the game, which has a long history in sparsely populated Plains states. Play a seven or eight man, single platoon game with limited substitutions. That's real football, and it's fun. It's the way backyard pickup games are played. Or shift to rugby to reduce injuries. Or just stick with soccer, lacrosse, basketball, wrestling, track, etc.

“Or shift to rugby to reduce injuries.”

Surely you jest——rugby can be very dangerous.
