Depends on the stories you heard - mine came from actual people who made it over/through the wall at the time when I lived there ... there was lots of blood stains in many places, even shrapnel and bullet holes (easy to patch)
The only person I knew actually ran between some tanks and was rescued by an American as soon as she crossed the line.
