I didn’t get squat either. Ok, so a time or two I did. Once, an unwrapped robe already in my closet and a dictionary another time. Yeah, how exciting. I learned very early that if I was going to have a cake, I’d better bake it myself because mother always had a memory problem with her only child’s birthday.
Due to that, I always made a big deal out of our kids’ birthdays. Always a party and an exciting present even with a tight budget. By that time, I could decorate cakes like a professional and made them to depict whatever the kids were into at the time.
And when the kid stomps in the room an hour later screaming “Wheres the effin’ PlayStation 4 I said I wanted?!”
I’m with you...gift giving should be special...I can remember some of my gifts from 55 years ago...because 1) I only got One, 2) it wasn’t anything I really wanted ie a lady’s broach of a swan? When I was 13...still have it tho.
I had a paper route by 11 too. I bought all my own clothes and really anything else beyond a roof and food. Trudeau senior had really ruined things and my father worked hard to make sure we kept a roof and food.
Birthdays weren’t fun because I got presents, it was fun because family and friends would get together and we’d have camp fired and roast hotdogs and drink some pop heh.
Maybe that worked in Vancouver heh. In Abbotsford they dug the outdoor “rock climber” look.
a grateful heart
nice
it was the grunge look man haha
Yes, I know it well heh, had a few buddies who looked like that. The 90s were quite something.
Sounds like good times.
I was born in ‘68 and i had Great times with my big huge italian family :)

ROFLMAO!!
I’ve seen some amazing birthday parties for young kids and wonder how the parents will be able to keep topping them by the time the kids are 16.
75 here, and the same deal.
Nowadays, if the internet doesn’t work, all the kids freak out.
I do like free Republic, but some days I wish we could get rid of the internet.
“I didn’t get jack squat for my birthday when I was a kid...I think I grew up OK.’’
Me either. The war was on and times were hard, even, or even especially, after the war. Didn’t even know for sure when my birthday was as it came and went with no notice. When we came to this country in ‘52 our sponsors baked me a birthday cake...I was so overwhelmed. And for the record, I grew up OK, too.
Awwww, what a sweetheart. I want to hug the little guy.
I love FR and I wish none of this technology happened in the first place sometimes. :)
The LAST time I felt UTTERLY peaceful was the NY blackout in like 2003 or something like that.
I got home luckily, had to go down 50 flights in Rock Plaza and JUST caught the X1 to staten island :)
Got home. Talked with friend joe upstairs and we shared a bottle of his home made wine and he had some light.
Then I went downstairs, it was dark. I lit a few candles, got the KFC out of the fridge and it was still good, and sat in the dark eating and then just enjoying NOTHING!!
Just quiet. and darkness. and peace.
and it was beautiful.
Yep - spoil them early and spoil them completely...eventually there will be no pleasing the child...and he will remain a child much longer than regular children....

Well they’re children into their 30s in some cases today.
The spoiling has been going on for a while.
of course not in every house, but as opposed to before, say, even the 80s, it’s been out of control.
I remember when playing in a refrigerator box was fun - or making a fort with blankets and towels in the living room....then at Christmas, would get 2 ‘good toys” and some miscellany (to include school clothes) and be pleased as pie.
