Lincoln urged passage of the "Corwin Amendment" that would have made it permanent.

Please explain to your rapt audience how Slavery would have been made permanent by the Corwin Ammendment.

It was already effectively permanent. There was no way they could abolish it with a constitutional amendment. They couldn't have gotten enough votes to override it until some of the Southern states agreed to it.

The Corwin Amendment would make it impossible to even bring it to a constitutional amendment.
