Virginia, which Lee considered his home and country, along with the upper States of the South, did not secede until President Lincoln began preparations to invade those lower Southern States.

Which did not happen until after the South had begun the war at Fort Sumter.

Those lower States wanted freedom from the high tariffs the North charged for raw materials. The lower states did not invade the North but tried to expel the Federalist forces.

Tariffs had virtually nothing to do with it. Defense of slavery was the most important reason for the Southern actions by a large margin.

Slavery ended peacefully in many other countries...

Other countries did not have regions willing to launch a bloody and protracted rebellion to protect their slaves.

South Carolina demanded that the Federal forces depart the garrison at Fort Sumter Island, in so far as South Carolina had seceded from the Union and they refused to surrender it. The bombardment that ensued was to regain the island at the entrance to Charleston Harbor. There were no casualties during the bombardment and the only when the Union soldiers agreed to leave, that a cannon exploded prematurely when firing a salute to signal their evacuation.

High tariffs had nothing to do with the South wanting to leave the union according to Northern Historians. (see tag line). The South did not launch a large and bloody rebellion. They wanted to leave and were attacked to prevent them from going.

Here is that revisionist history again. Lincoln started the War at Fort Sumter. If his plan to start a war there had failed, he had a backup plan to start the war in Pensacola Florida over fort Pickens.

Lincoln was going to have his war.
