Hard-up North Korea has so much to gain from denuclearising and becoming part of the civilised world. The hermit kingdom was actually wealthier than the now-affluent South before the Korean War, and is blessed with everything from abundant mineral resources and oil reserves to fertile agricultural land and stunning tourist-friendly beaches, as noted by President Trump. With this in mind, here are 15 industries that could make North Korea very rich indeed.
Tourism
During their historic summit in Singapore this month, President Trump showed Kim Jong-un a video extolling the virtues of tourism. “They have great beaches,” President Trump told journalists. “You see that whenever they're exploding their cannons into the ocean. I said, 'Boy, look at that view. Wouldn't that make a great condo?'"
North Korea does indeed boast world-class virgin beaches that are ripe for tourism development, and could well rival the South, which has a thriving industry – the tourism sector contributed a bumper $55.3 billion (£41.4bn) to the South Korean economy in 2017....

There are several things they could capitalize on immediately.
Remittances and charitable influx would be one.
Tourism to those who want to visit old homes and family cemeteries could yield cash ASAP. A country that legalized meth and marijuana would also attract those kinds of tourists.
Offering North Korean women as brides to rural farmers, bolstering that population and reducing desperation in their own nation, is another.
Mining takes time to develop.
Selling fishing rights or fish they catch themselves is certainly an option.
Garment manufacturing is a good fit; low cost workforce and in proximity to major shipping ports. Don’t agree with high tech manufacturing.
South Korea could profit from legal entertainment distribution.
I’m serious. No one wants these low-energy nuclear waste piles. They are piling up, much of it in 55-gallon barrels and leaking, some into ground water. Why should we contaminate our soil, when NK already has a contaminated hollow mountain that is far from populated areas? The stuff can’t be converted into nuclear bombs. A lot of it is clothing, contaminated materials and soil, and is sitting in huge piles taking up space and resources here in the USA. Truth is, a lot of our recycled goods are sent to Asia as it is (plastics, electronics, rubber, etc.) and it is buried there.
Astronomy tourism since the whole country is really dark at night.
So you want the norks to have this stuff, to potentially sell to others (or use themselves) to turn into dirty weapons.
Tell me that scenario isn’t a plausible one. Given who they have sold and bought stuff from.
This has to be see as a very valuable opportunity, though I fear when the time comes, it will be pissed away.
Do not think I want to know what the average water temp is there, but may be surprised.
You seem to be reliving the past. You really think the norks would take a bunch of our old scrap and build something to hand back to us? Like an Asian country did on battleship row in 1941. Oh ye of little faith. /s
I look at it like this: They’ll work harder. Being hungry will do that for you. Our ‘allies’ will be put to shame because Trump has an ulterior motive. Make NK another Asian tiger in say 5 years instead of 15-20. Then watch Cuba implode.
Why give them nuclear waste? Just asking.
They don’t need low-level waste to turn into dirty weapons. They already have the enriched stuff, much easier to use in dirty weapons. Like someone from NK is going to stuff irradiated clothing into a compact dirty weapon, I don’t think so, and it wouldn’t be radioactive enough to become a useful dirty weapon. It’s not practical to use low-level irradiated waste into anything, it’s simply waste.
You really shouldn’t try to prove a point in a topic you know nothing about.

Sir/Ma’am I’ve been qualified on three military reactor plants. One civilian plant. I’ve been involved with refueling said BWR. I’ve handled TMI 2 waste. Rocky Flats waste and qualified as rad worker for over 40 years that’s how I know you are an idiot.
Just proves you’re a f*n idiot. Don’t listen, do you? I asked you, are we talking low-level waste or highly enriched materials? Can’t answer? By the way, my wife has worked at a nuclear power plant. But that is not relevant to the discussion. There are many waste disposal sites for irradiated materials. While there may be millions of pounds of uranium products, there are billions of pounds of low-level irradiated waste materials such as clothing, tools and medical waste, and even more of contaminated soil and debris. We wouldn’t be giving the high-level materials which is a fraction of the waste, just the low-level useless waste. So f’ you for calling someone else an idiot when you comment without reading.
