There is a cat adoption place near my office. That probably isn’t helpful to you unless you’re in the Treasure Valley.

+1 on local vet. In the past 30 years, every single cat that has owned me came from a vet practice, "used":

Ours is a rescue. Try looking for cat rescue in your area.

(She just came in while I was typing this.)

Petfinder is a good resource.

Ask around at your work, at your church, and so forth.

My cats always found me.

I wasn’t a cat person, therefore cats love me.

I had three of them at one point and they would meet me at the door when I came home from work, follow me from room to room, and sleep on me at night.

Ask friends, family and co-workers if they have kitties on the way. We have a friend of the family with kitties that we plan on surprising our daughter with one in less than a week.

My immediate previous cat was an animal rescue kitty.
My cat previous to her was a feral born beastie, longhair kitty that was mostly leg, fluff, and rumbling purrs.
My first cat was in her previous life a barn cat who found out that couches were perfect kitty places.
In all instances, kitty chose me.
Funny how that works, right?

Go to a local feed store and ask around.

We just (two and a half weeks ago) adopted a one year old neutered cat from our local shelter. He was captured as a feral back in Oct, fostered by a very nice person until Feb, during which time she had him neutered, microchipped, vaccinated against rabies, distemper and tested for the incurable feline diseases, treated for fleas, ticks and worms. He is a beautiful classic tabby, perfectly housebroken and a very sweet creature who loves to be petted and curls up beside me on the sofa. All this for a $50 donation.

Purchase a seventy nine cent can of tuna from Aldis. Open and leave on front porch. Check hourly select the cat you want. 😁

I was going to say that, almost word for word. It's cat science!

I’m an Animal Shelter worker in my county.

Call your local animal shelter or SPCA (or even your local Animal Control Officer(s). We have lists of rescue groups and/or people on file who foster animals.

Your next step would be to Google local animal rescue groups and talk with them.

Keep in mind that rescue groups may have higher adoption fees than your local animal shelter and may be more strict in the adoption process.

Generally, when you adopt from a rescue group the animal has been vetted and may even be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Some financially challenged counties like ours only give the basic rabies (1 yr) and DAPPV vaccine, and deworm animals.
