'A Wrinkle in Time' Director Ava DuVernay Uses Racism to Explain Away Bad Reviews
PJ Media ^ | 3-14-2018 | Tyler O'Neil

Ava DuVernay, a black activist who directed a whole movie arguing that mass incarceration (a multi-racial problem) is a continuation of race-based slavery, suggested that racism explains why her latest movie, "A Wrinkle in Time," got bad reviews.

DuVernay gave a back-handed compliment to Vulture's Kyle Buchanan, who wrote about the "subtle, resonant" theme of the black main character's insecurity about her hair. "You were the only Caucasian journalist of any gender to see it, understand it and seriously ask me about it. Appreciate the chat, the sensitivity and the writing," the director tweeted.

Hair is indeed a sensitive issue among black women, and the film captured both the insecurity and the beauty of actress Storm Reid's unique curly hairstyle well. Even so, this theme was a tiny fraction of the film, and in the context of the bad reviews, DuVernay's focus on this element seems a desperate distraction.

"A Wrinkle in Time" has a "rotten" 42 percent rating among reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes. Many mass-market films have negative reviewer scores but positive audience ratings, but not this movie. The audience rating proved even worse for "A Wrinkle in Time," at a tragic "rotten" 36 percent.

Race didn't drive these negative reviews — content did. ......

Title pretty much said it all.

Disney used black activist(s) for cultural lecturing, of course it got bad reviews and bad rating (box office bomb). But for the executives, it is ok for the company, you know, corporate virtue signaling.

But the stockholders might have different opinions, after all they (I think, most of them) want their money investment returned more fruitfully.

I suppose this “racism” would explain why “Black Panther” was also a critical and financial disaster?

Maybe it was Russian meddling?

My son, his cousin (who read the book) and my mother in law went to see it last weekend. My MiL is a liberal and likes Oprah but still said it was the worst movie she had even seen. My son hated it as well.

So long as Disney owns and can keep ruining the Star wars franchise to the tune of a bazillion dollars they can get away with crap like this turkey.

Fundamentally changing the story line of a beloved children’s book series in order to rid it of its Christian foundation is not racist. It is demonic.

I should also note that I didn’t watch the movie, nor read the book, either. Sorry about that.

Good observation.

Black Panther did not try to preach cultural racism or sexism (or any other -ism) to the audience, it is simply a fantasy action movie.

I thought the bad guy in “Black Panther” wanted to arm all the non-whites in the world with Wakandan weaponry so they could throw off their shackles?

Wouldn’t that count as cultural racism?

It did not take long for the black female director to play the race card.
Yet, the Black Panther, staring a black male actor has done very well.

How ironic that the black racist, who practiced cultural appropriation to ruin a loved work of literature, accuses the people she offended of “racism”.

As you said, it was portrayed as the ‘bad guy’ in Black Panther.

It is not the same as cloaking it (cultural racism) with halos and virtually everything good as in the Wrinkle in Time movie.

Glad to hear that. Now I’ll consider seeing it. It appears to be a good story.

Loved the book as a child. When I saw the poster for the movie, my initial reaction was: “You have go to be kidding me...Oprah?...Really?” I want nothing to do with the Oprah.

She/he/it hates white people (yes we are people) white people stay away and now its something described with awful Hitleresque political rhetoric for being the reason for fail. Why we allow the so called liberals the use of such dehumanizing rhetoric is beyond me.
