1972 “American Pie” Don McLean

This is a no brainer. Of course American Pie is the best, most popular, and iconic TOP FORTY song of the seventies. Not even a close second. And no disco song is even in the conversation.

It's a damn shame that Crocodile Rock or Maggie Mae aren't in the finals, though. Glen Campbell? Really???? That's like having The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia or Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree in the finals. Yuck.

I guess it’s freaks versus other kids thingie

Lol

Anything from Dazed and Confused soundtrack beats either of these

Though I could handle American Pie for a while

Popular rock is Stairway and Freebird

Both biggest rock anthems ever and very 70s

Cheap Trick Surrender

Early Van Halen

Early AC DC

David Bowie Ziggy Stardust

Let it Bleed actually hit record stores first week followed by Exile on Main Street and Sticky Finger and Goats Head Soup and It’s only Rock and Roll and Black and Blue and Some Girls

Nice Stones run bound to be a hit in their somewhere

Layla...I mean really no Layla....

That’s my era being born 1957......and I just scratched surface

Two or three distinct sorts of kids in that era

Those who really followed new music....think movie Pirate Radio

And those who preferred singles pop.....

It’s a culture thang

My choice is not based on merit but one which of the two songs best embodies the decade of the 1970s. And that would be "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees. The Bee Gees just oozed the 1970s. They had the 1970s coming out of every pore on their bodies. Which is why when 1980 rolled around, the hits pretty much stopped.

Darn right. Right again.

I think the divide between these two particular songs is those who liked to dance (Stayin' Alive) and those who remember listening in the car, the bed, with a doobie, whatever (Amurricun Pah). Mama didn't go to no discos, but I sure liked to dance.

These songs are AM songs, as opposed to FM songs.

I saw Yes and Genesis live, twice each. Amazing shows, not just the music, but also the Roger Dean stage sets behind Yes.

I listened to FM exclusively, either prog rock or classical. Somehow, I heard both of these songs anyway.

Ditto. And while American Pie is not a bad song if you're in the mood, Maggie May is a classic.
