For the American there was an attempt to put pressure on the Singapore government not to implement the punishment.
Singapore is virtually corruption free.
Back in the day that was not a very known fact, I had a young collegue in the marketing department who was sent there. Apparently, he thought it’s business as elsewhere in Asia, trying some kickback scheme and the company was slapped with hefty bribery fines. Needless to say, the guy career in our company ended abruptly and his manager was fired too.
