Both the Glock 10mm and the .357 magnum are serious personal defense calibers. YouTuber mark3smle demonstrates what each caliber is capable of against a ballistic gel.
Ballistic gelatin is a testing medium scientifically correlated to swine muscle tissue (which in turn is comparable to human muscle tissue), in which the effects of bullet wounds can be simulated.
In other word, the ballistic gel gives you an idea of the path of the bullet when it penetrates a target.
You can observe the length of the penetration and the thickness of the canal. Normally, the beginning entrance is usually where its thick. This thickness is the density of where muscle tissues are being damaged.
These two powerful cartridges penetration are quite impressive. Traditionally, the .357 magnum has a long track record of a mini-hand cannon for personal defense.

The 10mm is a newcomer in the hunting world, but has become a big player in the market for bear hunters or anyone needing extra power. The 10mm penetration was around 16 inches.
Without talking about the numbers, both calibers are very impressive for power. If you’re an auto frame person, go with a Glock10mm. If you’re into Dirty Harry mini hand cannon, go with a .357.

I keep my .357 loaded with 38 special hollow points for in-home. Have 4 speed loaders and have 38 special in 2 and .357 in the other 2. Also have a 12 gauge but would hate to have to fire it (or even the .357) indoors w/o time to put on ear muffs....
I kept a sharp sword handy when kids were little. Kids understand at a young age "sharp, don't touch". At short range inside the house, being run through with a sword will stop a thug effectively. Plus, a thug might be tempted to rush a gun in an attempt to disarm, but NOBODY rushes a sword.

15 rounds standard, but you can extend them to 17.
I had a friend in Alaska who’s father (A Vietnam and LE veteran) had just started reloading. He had a nice S&W M686 with a 4” barrel. He read a then-current reloading manual, saw the max load for the .357 with a 110 gr. JHP bullet, and poured in the max of WW-296 powder (very slow-burning and meant for longer barrels). We were shooting at my house in Wasilla. He stepped up to the firing line, assumed a proper shooting stance, and fired. What followed was one of the funniest scenes I’ve ever been witness to - a 3 foot diameter miniature sun exited the barrel after the bullet left and the concussion was so great it blew his baseball cap right off. He turned to me all wide eyed, opened the cylinder to safe the weapon, held it out to me, and said “Here.” After that I let him fire some of my more reasonable reloads and he realized it wasn’t the gun. I broke down his loads and as I recall there was something like 22 gr. of WW-296 which is way more than I would have contemplated putting in a 4” barreled handgun.
Yup. This makes a great argument for pocket carry 9mm with Gold Dots.
The 125 grain load in .357 is a very effective man stopper. Be aware shooting this load a lot in K frame S&W’s is not good. It can lead to the forcing cone to crack. I practice with a few in my Model 19 but mainly shoot 158 grain round for practice and carry the 125 for self-defense.
I alternate between a Model 19 .357, Model 28 .357 and a Glock 29. I like these higher velocity rounds. Out of the bunch the Model 28 is the most controllable and pleasant to fire.
I have the 8-rd S&W 357 wheel gun. Handy little tool right thar.

I have an older 1911 .45 that I inherited. Haven’t yet fired it. I do love my .357.
