Sexual Harassment: A Water Cooler Discussion
self | jimjohn

Posted on 12/12/2017 7:30:55 AM PST by jimjohn

In light of all the recent 'allegations', a kind of water cooler discussion started at my workplace among the men in particular. How far beyond politics is this going to go? Today, we have a young woman here who for the 2nd day in a row, is wearing VERY provocative clothing. We're talking "no-man-is-looking-at-her-face" type clothing. If continued unchecked, this woman will probably find herself propositioned or worse somewhere around the work place. Being a not so young man, this is not the first time I've seen women dressing/behaving like this is the work place, and yes, there are dress codes.

It is of-course un-PC to question ANY accusation, even though we all KNOW there may be more than one side to the story (e.g., she gave every indication that she wanted to OR went through with it, then regretted it later).

Frankly, ladies and gents, despite the fact that we may enjoy some of the mighty fall who are NOT on our side of the political aisle, I find some of these allegations... well, weak, over embellishing, or the possibility that something has been left out of the story. Bosses are terminating first, and asking questions later.

As stated in the movie 'Hunt for Red October': "...this business is going to get out of control and we'll be lucky of we live through it..."

I agree. Many of these allegations are well founded, I’m sure.

However, I feel we are approaching the level of social hysteria not seen since the Salem witch trials. So many are outed now daily. I wonder how many are true and how many are “triggered”.

I used to do the 3dayKoman walk until I figured out the connection to PP. There are hundreds of people who show up all along the route to cheer you on. One year as we walked around Mission Bay, a young black totally ripped male model was there encouraging us to take photos with him. He was the male version of the provocatively dresse young women at the office. Just thought of him. Pretty sure he was not attracted to middle aged women who had been walking two days and camping out. Shoot, I’m guessing he wasn’t attracted to women at all.

It is fairly common for females to do this nowadays in the hopes of provoking a response of sexual attention, which is then used to get PAID!!

If you don’t FIRE her today, you will be writing a Big Check tomorrow for sexual harassment, whether real or not, perception is all that matters today.

Many big employers have dress codes. If the employee is violating the dress code, HR could and should address it. If the employee is not in violation of the dress code, the employee’s attire shouldn’t be an issue.

When talking look directly eye to eye. Be very discrete in glancing, and never, ever touch her under any circumstances.

Should she fall, try to get a female colleague to help her up. Barring that, make certain you have her permission.

If she’s unconscious, call the fire department.

Almost anything can be used against you.
I’m not having a watercooler discussion with anybody about anything.

I think the men in your office ought to lodge a collective complaint against her with HR for how she's dressing and say it's inappropriate for a professional office situation.

Turn the tables. She's doing it deliberately.

Agreed. Between the lost productivity from distracted guys, and the risk of a future sexual harassment lawsuit, this woman is of negative actual worth to your company.

If Cory Booker's campaigning against Roy Moore is positioning himself to 'take the higher ground', he's doing it wrong.

I share your concerns. In my previous career I once had a female employee who accused another male employee of sexual harassment. It was determined there was no substance to the charge. I learned she had previously made similar unsubstantiated charges about two different supplier representatives. It was then that I had Facilities install a large window in the door to my office. In today's atmosphere things might have turned out very differently for these men.

Now,in my second career as a psychotherapist, I restrict my practice to men.

I think all men should keep their workplace interactions with women formal and public, no matter how well you think you know the woman.

> Many of these allegations are well founded, I’m sure.

You can’t get rid of Trump if “well founded” is the basis for getting rid of people. There are lots of people with different motivations involved in these talks. The group with a motivation of getting rid of Trump is going to make sure the bar for removal is kept low.

Basically, “if someone has accused Trump of doing it, it’s a fireable offense”. They’ll sacrifice as many of their own as needed to keep a justification for getting rid of Trump. And the more women they can claim are accusing Trump of something other people have been fired for, the more they feel justified. It’s a long shot, but 4 years of Trump “winning” will set them back decades (courts, economy, “oppressed people” seeing how non-D policies help them, etc). So all approaches to getting rid of Trump or at least minimizing his wins must be used.

Owner of a place I used to work would bring his dog in occasionally. Big bumbly mutt, friendly as all get out.

One of ladies would occasionally wear clothing that was fairly inappropriate for work. Nothing awful, we're not talking lingerie, but there was more skin showing than there should have been. Bare midriffs and such.

So, one day we're all standing in the hallway talking and Ms. Slightly Inappropriate starts screaming at the top of her lungs. Sounded like something had gotten ahold of her - it was a little worrisome.

Turned out the dog had planted his cold wet nose right in the exposed small of her back, rather unexpectedly.

Poor dog, he may have been traumatized for life. But, she started to wear more appropriate clothes thereafter.

Moral of the story? Not sure. Maybe its that "Dogs can't be sued for sexual harassment". Or, maybe just thinking of her trying to levitate 3 feet off the ground while shrieking just makes me smile.

To me there is a wide gulf between sexual assault and unwanted attention. Unfortunately that gulf has been narrowed to a brook now. Soon it will be I know what was in his/her mind as they looked at me.
