The federal lands kept after the Mexican-American war were never intended to be kept in perpetuity. When the states there were formed, the idea was to put lands under state management, as is the case in most of the East. This never happened. The Feds just flipped the bird to limited federal authority. As a sop to the idea of federalism, and to avoid a rebellion, the Feds “allowed” ranchers and such to use the land. But it was always supposed to be under the aegis of the states and the people. Now, federal lands belong to DC. Period.
Maybe we have to wait until after next November.
