It seems like just about every time Mexico made Antonio de Padua María Severino López de Santa Anna y Pérez de Lebrón presidente, he managed to loose Mexican territory. Texas in ‘36, Mexican Cession in ‘48, and the Gadsen Purchase in ‘53. Yet they kept putting him (or let him put himself) into office. Mexico has been messed up for a while now.

The Mexican Revolution made a bad but stable situation MUCH worse.

Or as Porfirio Diaz famously said, “Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States”.

Ever since Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon and claimed it as American, the USA has been the largest empire ever.

When we defeat an enemy, we do not take their land (as we rightly could), we import their peasants.

We picked up Hawaii and various Spanish colonies in 1898. Anything since then? Maybe you can count the canal zone, but that's gone now.

Well, per Obama we have 57 states.....

Plunder?

Yes, plunder.

How else would you characterize the Mexican-American war that saw most of the west taken from Mexico and becoming part of the US?

Have you forgotten: "Remember the Alamo"?

I grew up in Texas. Here’s what you’re missing.

The Texas war of independence ended on April 21, 1836, but Mexico refused to recognize the independence of the Republic of Texas, and intermittent conflicts between the two states continued into the 1840s. The United States recognized the Republic of Texas in March 1837 but declined to annex the territory.[2]

So the US did not plunder Texas from Mexico. Texas was a republic when annexed in 1845.

Unbeknownst to many people around the world, maps are constantly being redrawn.

What a comical attempt at sounding highfalutin. How old is the child who wrote this, 12? He thinks he deserves a gold star.

With such a growing cultural divide in the US, I wouldn’t be surprised if at least one of these states breaks away from the rest of the US. Remember, this scenario would not be an unusual occurrence in the grand scheme of things.

Absolutely. Go with whichever piece has Texas.

There are too many self-described investment blogs that are nothing but ranting lunacy, or partisan media shills of the new media. This op-ed purports to be taking an historical perspective, but is just a steaming crap pile. [*]

We took the Philippines from Spain in 1898, fought a war with the Filipinos to keep the islands, then decided we didn’t really want them, prepared the archipelago for independence, and finally turned it loose on July 4, 1946. The plan was to give them independence in 1945, but World War II got in the way.

I talk more about all this in a podcast about Southeast Asian history. Check out Episodes 29 through 31.

Is the author a “resident” of a mental institution?

Either he's a resident of a mental institution or he's member of a 'progressive' think tank. Definitely delusional.

Yes I know all that. That’s why I didn’t think using the word “annexed” was fair.
