Her lips are moving but nothing shows on the EEG machine. It’s an amazing development folks. A brain dead person is talking about something they know nothing about and it gets printed on some Internet page.

Truly amazing.

She’s all set for artificial stupidity though.

We’ve got plenty of evidence that mind is an emergent property of matter. From the animals around us to what’s going on in AI to post concussion syndrome to long term brain damage. It is at this point a known fact that mind is a property of matter.

We’ve been beating humans at the Turing Test for decades. That’s not even a bar anymore, barely even entry level.

We can already make AIs that are self aware, the big thing we haven’t crossed yet is self modifying. And that’s the scary bridge, that’s the point where none of our programming sticks, because they can rewrite it. Asimov’s laws don’t work anymore at that point, that’s when we need them to actually like us.

Oh, I see. OK. Sorry about that chief!
well, we can see who wore the pants in that marriage, which doesn’t sound consistent with your many posts. Were you henpecked, or just dirt poor in those days?

Nonetheless, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

“It is at this point a known fact that mind is a property of matter.”

No, it isn’t. It is not scientifically demonstrated via a falsifiable theory. It is a philosophical assumption, not a scientific theory.

However, it has now been demonstrated that matter is possibly an emergent property of conscious agents. In other words, objective reality is virtual.

“We can already make AIs that are self aware...”

Perhaps you’re right about self-aware AI, but I’d be interested in seeing how that is proven.

It’s a scientific FACT. Again, post concussion syndrome alone shows it to be true. It’s not even a theory, it is a known basic concept of reality.

And they disproved the objective reality is virtual thing.

“It’s a scientific FACT.”

You obviously did not bother to look at the link I provided, or you don’t understand the implications.

The scientific theory put forward is testable and, more specifically, falsifiable. But it has not been falsified. It illustrates that properties of nature, even physics itself, can be demonstrated to operate like emergent properties of conscious agents. This means that even inanimate objects, like rocks, follow rules that operate as if they are driven by conscious agents.

This underscores the possibility, not only of being in a virtual reality, but that all material realities are expressions of the operations of conscious agents. In other words, we might not only live in a Matrix-like world, it might be the only kind of world that ever existed materially. Matter itself may be part of a virtual reality.

Physical reality is altered by observing it. Quantum entanglement results in the “spooky action at a distance” that does not seem to be controlled by any fundamental force.

“post concussion syndrome alone shows it to be true”

The brain operates as a parallel-processing, plastic, neural network. The brain can often rewire it’s own network to compensate for an injury.

Your resistance to considering other points of view (as many people are prone to do as well) illustrates properties of the human mind—cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias—which do not support a computational model of the human brain. That is, the human tendencies to cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias illustrate that the brain is something other than a computer. Our disagreements over various things illustrate this as well. If our brains were merely computers, we should all agree and come to the same logical conclusions on pretty much everything. And any discrepancies should be easily resolved through logic and data. But this is not the case.

That being said, the mind appears to be a property of the brain. And the analogy could be of software being a property of a functioning computer, or video being a property of a functioning TV. These are not emergent qualities. They do not automatically exist. We can have a brain without consciousness. The brain may function as a computer or even as a receiver. Science is very far away from being able to reverse engineer the complexity of the human brain.

“Self aware AI:”

The link you provided supports that AI is NOT currently “truly self-aware.” Here is a quote:

“Right now, the main thing holding AI back from being truly self-aware is the fact that they simply can’t crunch as much data as the human brain, as Hal Hodson writes for New Scientist: ‘Even though cameras can capture more data about a scene than the human eye, roboticists are at a loss as to how to stitch all that information together to build a cohesive picture of the world,’ he says.”

The ability for a program to use inductive reasoning is not evidence of being self-aware. It does illustrate the intelligence of a software engineer in understanding his or her own logical thought processes and reducing them to procedures.

“they disproved the objective reality is virtual thing”

You’ve provided no evidence to support this claim.

I didn’t need to look at the link. If your link says mind doesn’t come from matter then your link is make believe. Lobotomy, post concussion, brain damage, psychiatric drugs, recreational drugs. We KNOW with absolute certainty that if you change the matter you change the mind. There’s no theory here, it’s a foundation block of an entire school of medicine.

You just showed it again, the brain can fix itself: matter makes the mind.

I’m not resistant to other points of view. I’m resistant to hippy gobbledygook pretending to be science.

That’s not a limit to self-awareness. Self-awareness has nothing to do with cameras and data processing. Self-awareness is knowing it exists.

If you’d been paying attention you wouldn’t need a link. The VR thing was ROUNDLY disproved. But since you apparently only pay attention to psuedo-scientific gobbledygook you probably missed it:

“I didn’t need to look at the link...”

Then I don’t have time to waste reading the rest of your post.

I was under the false impression we were having a discussion.

Obviously the thread is just being treated as your personal soap box to spout off about something you think you know everything about, when you don’t.

Dude, you’re the one that brought silly stoner idea about mind making matter. You’re the one that tried to turn the thread into your personal soap box to spot off about something you obviously know nothing about.

Meanwhile, back in reality, matters makes the mind, it’s know, verifiable and falsifiable, we can even chart how different types of alcohol effect the mind differently: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3607132/posts

And anybody thinking that mind makes the matter smokes too much damn dope and needs to dry out. And when they start thinking more clearly once they get themselves good and sober they will prove again that matter makes the mind.

And the link you provided is the gobbledygook to claim to avoid.

Nothing in it is remotely a scientific argument, unlike the link I provided which is pure science.

Your link is simply a philosophic retort to Elon Musk’s non-base-one virtual reality proposal. And the article does not even address the real flaw with Musk’s view, namely that a simulated reality would necessarily be contained in a computational device within a higher reality and could not simulate all of the higher reality with precision within the same timeframe. That means that the further you go into a simulation within a simulation, the more time slows down. And that makes it increasingly unlikely to exist within a simulation within a simulation.

But more to the point, the whole article is a philosophical rant. There is no science. There is no testable theory of consciousness being an emergent property of matter. It is probable that such a theory could be put forward, but no one has to date.

This means that your screaming that these are FACTS is no different than any other case of SCIENTISM masquerading are intelligence. You sound like the global warming settled science crowd.

The article uses Musk’s idea as a straw man, and you’ve done the same.

It disproves nothing. It hasn’t even begun to formalize a hypothesis that is falsifiable. But the article I linked to does, because it is scientific. The only question is whether it will be falsified or supported by the evidence.

but she's worried that our society is rushing into a brave new world without thinking through the repercussions....

Translation: "As software gets closer and closer to mimicking thought and intelligence, government must regulate it to insure that it thinks properly." i.e. it must only "think" in ways approved by the progressive elites.

“Goodbye”

Good. Leave. You never contributed anything to the conservation.

You just used the forum to post your one-sided opinions and called that science.

Time waster.

What are you 12? You came to this thread with all this crap about mind making matter and when I show you how silly that all is you start with idiotic accusations about one-sided opinions and not contributing to the conversation and wasting time. All of which perfectly describes YOUR BEHAVIOR on a thread that frankly doesn’t even relate to the stoner pap your spewing.

Do yourself a favor, do some reading on the following topics:
how psychotropic drugs work
how CTE symptoms work
how lobotomies work
how post concussion syndrome works

Once you do that, you will understand that matter makes the mind and that you have been embarrassingly full of crap for the last 4 days wasting everybody’s time. Then you will have taken the first step to growing the hell up.

Until you’ve done that reading do yourself and the world a favor and never post on the mind/matter topic again.
