I spent several years in the local Jaycees supporting, among other things, the local food pantry. One year I asked our contact what the food pantry needed this year, that the Jaycees could work on. His reply? "Volunteers who speak Spanish, because so many of the families only speak Spanish." Since I did not know anybody in town who only spoke Spanish, and I knew a lot of people, I thought that these people were not actually neighbors, so my support of the local food pantry decreased dramatically.

And, no, I don't think that made me a bad person.
