Illegal Gunsmiths cranks out Bootleg 1911 Pistols

Handmade, bootleg 1911 pistols are all the rage in the Philippines. Illegal gunsmith families crank out these pistols in secrecy.

This video shows us how bootleg 1911 pistols are made and distributed in the black market in the Philippines..

In a video by Underworld Inc., we learn what a real ghost gun is.

In the Philippines, whole families are employed to illegally manufacture Colt Model 1911 pistol clones. They work in hidden workshops with crude tools to turn out descent pistols for paying customers. Their work is surprisingly good, and they do this to feed their families. Buyers line up for these untraceable pistols.

The idea that banning guns will make them disappear clearly isn’t practical. Hidden workshops will build guns wherever they’re banned. See the full Illegal bootleg 1911 pistol video here.

Given the quality control of the last Colt 1911 I bought (Commander), where can I get one of these handmade 1911s?

I thought Marcos ordered a roundup off privately owned guns in the PI way back...

They may top Pakistan in the arena of hammered out, homemade firearms.

What I saw of the Pakistan gun economy was pretty impressive.

That's probably why there's such a thriving bootleg industry.

So brilliantly simple. One John Moses Browning’s masterpiece.

Welded frame. Are all real Colt 1911’s welded?

My folks and I visited the Philippines in 1960.
Believe me, everyone was carrying a sidearm or flipping those butterfly knives...

Legally licensed, commercially made 1911 type pistols are not welded, but there is no reason such a system would not work.

It would be a bit more subject to corrosion. Perhaps it would wear out a bit faster.

Most people do not shoot thousands of rounds through a pistol, so most people would never notice.

The problem is if the weld ever failed (I said if) you'd probably not get any warning and you could end up with the slide flying backwards into your head.

These guns would need to be inspected for cracks before each use. No cracks and you are probably good.

They are probably using any scrap steel available. Most likely mild steel.

In that case, the frame is likely to deform over time, and eventually give headspace problems leading to misfires.

I suspect that would be the earliest failure.

But, subject the welds to corrosion, and they could fail spectacularly, as you suggest.

I meant frame/slide, instead of only the frame.

I would be apprehensive using this gun. Because it looks like the real thing doesn’t make it so.

Absolutely.

I suspect it would not hold up well.

I also suspect it will shoot a couple of hundred shots without problems. It is a pretty robust design, created in 1910, when we did not have as good as understanding of metallurgy as we do now.

I would love to get a hold of one and test it to destruction.

I wonder if I could get the Philippine government to cooperate on that. Hmmm...

It is the same with Chinese car parts. They look real but they totally suck.
