I see a lot of 60+ land barons ("farmers") having coffee in the AM, their brand new $60,000+ pickups parked in the lot. The trucks are tax write-offs, and these old guys love to option them out for pickup truck show-and-tell.

Their sons or the hired labor drive the old man's cast-offs that then actually have to earn their keep. One fly in the ointment is that the fancy rigs turned "users" are no longer the relatively simple trucks of old that were easy/cheap to fix, and the hand-me downs of today are not always up to the beating they take when used as something other than people haulers.

For once we didn’t get a cheapie. Silly us. I won’t say which model, but it wasn’t a compact and not the base trim. Love the concept, but the damn thing has had issues large and small that we have seen on cars we’ve had with over 200,000 miles on them. We’re looking at Fords, but given our recent experience they’re no longer our first choice.

You made that up! There are no women out there who would shout such a thing to a man in a pickup truck.

I think you are jealous because people like me can afford pickup trucks without having to “haul stuff” in them. I hire other people for that.

Remember, envy is a self-destructive emotion. Don’t let the fact that I once had a pickup truck mainly for commuting eat away at you. Not healthy!

And now that I think about it, cheap shouldn’t mean unreliable. In fact, folks who want/need an inexpensive vehicle are probably the folks who need reliability the most. Maybe care companies should keep that in mind. :-)

I bought my first brand new Ford F250 Super Cab, 7.3 liter diesel in 1993. It had premium stereo, power windows and door locks and 5spd manual transmission. The rest of the interior was all vinyl including the floors. It was great for hunting, fishing and my daily farm needs of hauling hay and horses. When necessary I threw open the doors and hosed out the interior.

Total cost with tax, license, and lifetime oil changes was $16,300.

I’ve a ‘02 F250 with 326000 and it will blow the doors off a new one. Those 7.3 diesels are solid gold.

A lot of people are just too emotionally invested in vehicles. If a toaster (forget about it until needed, then works every time) is desired, get a Lexus/Toyota. No pizzazz or romance, but nothing is more reliable.

Put that way, sometimes people will realize that they have priorities they don’t want to admit beyond reliability.

“Yeeh Haw! Let’s go muddin!”........

OK, but were taking YOUR NEW TRUCK, not mine. My old 1999 F-250, with less 80K miles, will stay right where it is, with no rust, all shinny and well pampered.. :)

heh heh

I am the the owner of an F-type Jaguar, which is a pain in most ways imagined.

I know about having vehicles just because I can!

The idea that there is a correlation between penis size and the vehicle you drive kind of baffles me. Some people just like trucks. I almist bought a truck recently -- I don't haul things, but I thought about using it for winter commuting and trips north. I ended up buying a cheap sports car instead because the cost of fuel day to day outweighs whatever rugged use I might have for a truck. I don't think my weiner would have shrunk if I went with the truck :)

Then again, apparently a sports car indicates deficiency as well. Dangit, seems like I just can't win at this game!

I like Jaguars and I believe that anybody that wants one and can afford one should have one. What I won’t do is buy an RV or a boat because they require way too much work and aggravation to upkeep. But if others want to own one, all the power to them.

We drive our cars til they drop. And we take excellent care of them. We don’t care about color or style. We want a vehicle that does what we need it to do, efficiently and reliably. And since we’re not keen on paying through the nose for bells and whistles that come with an insane mark-up, we usually buy the base trim. We didn’t with the Ford, though none of our many issues with it relate to anything to do with higher trim features. I might be inclined to cut car manufacturers some slack if owning a car was still fun, but that ship sailed many moons ago.

BTW, I’ve ridden/driven in everything from a Model T to a Porche. I used to love cars. Now they’re just a pain in the a$$. :-)
