When I was recruited in the late ‘80’s for a group of mercenaries hired by the Zulus to fight rivals in South Africa, the German who made the pitch told me that the 30 day routine in the bush was mostly walking trails and finding a lone male near an enemy village, beheading him, and putting his head on a stake next to the trail at the entrance to that village. Sort of like gang graffiti staking turf. The pay was one Kruggerrand per day deposited in a numbered account in Zurich. Could have made some serious coin.
