My sister relocated there in 1999. She just passed away in December. She left with her husband from the Pocono mountains area for the same reasons you mentioned. She made good friends there. She lived out in the rural desert area. Had sheep, chickens,alpacas, on her little 5 acre hobby farm. She loved it there.
