Vanity: Preparing to move to Phoenix
self | self

Posted on 08/29/2017 1:35:04 PM PDT by Dr. Sivana

We are looking to relocate from Columbus, Georgia to Phoenix, Arizona. Two members of my family suffer from the local pollen and humid weather. We also need to be closer to traditional Catholic Latin Mass and Sacraments. Wonderful as Columbus is culturally and politically (in the region, not the city proper), there aren't a lot of local traditional Catholic resources.

I have been stymied in my attempts to even get so much as an interview for the jobs I apply for online.

Presently, I work in IT (storage/servers/backup) in the financial industry. My skills are not cutting edge and I am not a programmer/developer, but in the past I was always able to get interviews at least. Any of you Arizona folks know of a good strategy for finding good employment in the area?

Please don't try to sell me on other parts of the country, my wife and I have done our research, and this is where we wish to relocate.

Thanks for providing information from a social source I find more trustworthy than almost any other.

There seems to be more grass in Phoenix than Tucson. Tucson is 10 cooler and higher.

Make sure you have plans to deal with the Arizona heat!

I am IT too and tried to find work there. Abysmal.

The going rate for contract work was less than 1/2 what it was anywhere else in the country I’ve been.

Same for me in Denver. Low rates, and had to travel 50% of the time.

Best rates are in upper Midwest, think Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska.

Where people move from, if they can.

One day I rode my motorcycle from Death Valley to Phoenix.

The difference was hardly noticeable. Hot like New Englanders cannot fathom.

I cannot be of any help with your job search, but may be able to make a few suggestions:

The pollen count in Phoenix is very high. Our son’s allergies worsened greatly when he moved there from CT.
The Bishop of Phoenix is an excellent orthodox Catholic, and the mass in Latin is available there.
AZ remains a conservative state, and in addition has two great benefits: no daylight savings time and wide school choice.

We live in Tucson and love it. Yes, it can very hot, but with experience one can work around it. Take a vacation in June, or September. The monsoon rains in July and August can be cooling and also interesting.
Good luck.

Check the suburbs of Mesa Chandler and Gilbert for IT companies. Intel just invested $7 billion to expand its Chandler operations.

Moved to Gilbert last year from Fairfax VA and love it. Zero traffic, compared to DC. You’d be suprised how much greenery there is here in the summer. Get a pool, though.

Be careful when they the locals use the word “river” as in you stay on that road, cross the river and then...I got those same directions in 1980 and got half way out of town but never crossed a river. Turned around from to head back to where I started and then they explained it was a dry river.

There are no rivers except in flash floods.

Here's a list of corporations in the Phoenix metro area from Wikipedia.

Also, don't count on much allergy relief out there. That used to be the case when there was nothing but dirt and concrete, but with civilization comes lots of greenery ... some of it non-native to the area. And you picked a good time of year to move there as it will be cooling down soon.

You can’t go wrong in Phoenix. Lots of economic activity in the valley where you can make money moving in and out of houses and condos. I spent 6 months in Scottsdale and made a few bucks that way. The heat arriving mid-April ran me out of there. Robert Kiyosaki(Rich Dad Poor Dad) operates out of there.

In any urban neighborhood, you’re likely have some older male mulberry trees which are an allergy potential. If you move into a natural landscape or go out in the hills, the Palo Verde tree turns yellow and puts out tons of pollen. Those are just the worse offenders. Just a warning. The heat in Phoenix has the extreme temperatures of the region plus an urban heat sink.

I was born, raised and worked in Arizona before the 1980s cycle of mine closings and loved it. I lived in a small town 70 miles east of Phoenix that is now a mess following a mine closure in 1984.

I’d take a trip there during the hot season before doing anything decisive.

Some companies still recruit thru temp agencies, and they can be a great a way to break thru the noise of LinkedIn, Monster, etc. You might want to pick a few to chat with, see what the trending jobs are, wage ranges, etc. Think outside the box when it comes to your resume. Here’s a quick search. Good luck!

Phoenix is a pizza oven. It is also a Rat controlled city. Flagstaff is much more moderate, it even has a legit 4 seasons.

Dr. Sivana, from what country did you emigrate? Are you one of those H1-B visa holders who are undercutting Americans for available IT jobs who were brought here by Microsoft and who were trained by the Americans who were subsequently fired so you could take their jobs? I’ve been reading the posts on this thread, thus far no one has bothered to ask you these questions. Interesting you would use a conservative website to gain additional advantage over others in the field, yet not be called on it.

That’s a good suggestion, and one that has worked for me in the past. I wasn’t sure who the local players are, but I will start with the Yelp page.

[108 at midnight.]

Ow.

That’s like Africa-hot. Yikes.

On my tourist trip way, way back, I hit Planet Hollywood and the Hard Rock (Camelback?) - plus acquired many dozens of bottles of Bill Johnson’s BBQ sauce - which of course now you can buy online. Maybe you could back then. Anyways, bought a bag at Venture (remember those?) tossed it into my rented Thunderbird and proceeded to clean out a few grocery stores. It was hilarious when I went through the check-out line. I would clear a whole shelf into the shopping cart. Brought some back for a buddy and myself - I usually had BBQ’s at my house every weekend. Oh yeah, had money in those days, lol.

Moved here “short term” 35 years ago with no intention of staying. After being here one summer and a winter, my cold and snow hating wife informed me we would never leave. We haven’t. Love it.

Easy to get away on summer weekends to pine forests an hour to the northeast or in 2 hours to the north. San Diego 5 hours to the west.

Park in the shade; A/C is everywhere. Do yard work early.

No problem. Wouldn’t trade for cooler mountain climates or the cloudy NW coast ... and have lived in both.

Each year, you’ll get 100 more sun shine days than places like Buffalo, NY, for example.

To each her/his own... I’ll take the sunshine.

While I’m sure some don’t adjust and leave, the reality is that most choose to stay and eventually stay after they retire...

Ya got me. I emigrated years ago as a refugee from Connecticut. I am so ashamed, that I often tell people that I was from Krypton, but my home blew up. I still secretly seek out the apizza. The Georgians around here pick up on it immediately ("Yoor not from around here, are yoo?") and I have to fess up. They accept me anyway!
