I really like this idea of asking if the PI would like to be a State. If I still lived there I think I might object...but I would think about it quite seriously.
However, the advantage of statehood would be people like me wouldn’t be thought to be Filipinos or Filipinas even though our parents were (are) US citizens and born in the USA and the PI was a Territory at the time of our birth.
I dread renewing my drivers license this next go around. The people making decisions about who is or isn’t a citizens don’t understand the place we were born doesn’t matter as much a the citizenship of our parents, the literal time of our birth in Territories that later became states or independent countries, or that documents disappear in fires of war.
I cannot imagine being exported to the country of my birth when I am almost 80 yo and know no one in that country and have not even visited it since I was a child. Language? What a laugh. And all that potential turmoid. because we have stopped teaching history and civics and our young people are getting as ignorant of history and civics, etc., as bricks.
