People never seem to remember that Byrd turned on the KKK, explicitly repudiated his racist past, and worked to combat racism.
I believe in the transformative power of change and the ability of people to outgrow their past mistakes. For this reason I’m unwilling to use him as a club against Democrats the way so many other people do.
I would also be willing to forgive any of those Nazis from Charlottesville that did the same as him.
