The 55 year period between 1865 and 1920 put the final nail in the Republic and put the scumbags in DC in an unassailable position short of nuking the Goddamned place.
It also led to a nine volume alternate history series about the history of the USA and CSA as they struggle for supremacy on the continent. Harry Turtledove is a really entertaining ‘alternate historian’.
