Bringing Black Youth into Mainstream Gun Culture

For years, I have been writing the urban black community is a natural place to recruit Second Amendment activists. The people there are those most in need of guns for self defense.  John Lott came to the same conclusion with academic studies of who benefits most from concealed carry laws.

Second Amendment activists have long said that firearms training increases responsibility and maturity. It has worked in rural areas. It should work in urban centers. Maj Toure decided to take that concept and run with it.  Maj is one of a number of black firearms activists that teach in support of the Second Amendment. Maj founded Black Guns Matter. From blavity.com:
The BGM leader educated the YESPhilly students through various workshops, covering topics like conflict resolution, de-escalation, firearm safety, their rights as citizens and the Second Amendment.

Maj Toure founded Black Guns Matter in 2015 and tours across the country providing Second Amendment education and information to urban communities according to the BGM website.

“I don’t think there’s a black gun culture or white gun culture, I think there’s an informed gun culture and an ignorant gun culture," Toure said.
These efforts are part of a sea change in attitudes about guns among blacks and women.  John Lott has documented that more black people and women are getting concealed carry permits than ever before. A majority of Black Americans now see firearms ownership as a positive. People with carry permits now exceed 16 million people. That is about 6.5% of the total adult population.    From foxnews.com:
Women are largely fueling the increase. Among the eight states that had data from 2012-16, permits for men grew by 22% and permits for women soared by 93%. In the 14 states with 2016 data on sex, women now make up 36% of permit holders.

Over those same years, the number of blacks with permits increased 30% faster than the number of whites with permits. Blacks now make up 11% of permit holders. A few states provide a breakdown for Asian-Americans, and in those states they accounted for the largest percentage increase in permits.
Black people, especially black women, are realizing the right to bear arms is a right that has been taken from them. That realization is making draconian gun control impossible to pass.

The necessity of keeping slaves disarmed, and the racist desire to keep freed blacks disarmed, drove gun control laws and the gun control movement. Integrating responsible gun ownership and Second Amendment rights into urban black culture destroys the racist roots of gun control.

At Black Guns Matter, they embrace this mission. It is one that all Second Amendment activists can embrace. From blackgunsmatter.com:
The Black Guns Matter mission is to educate urban communities on their 2nd amendment rights and responsibilities through firearm training and education.
Those pushing for a disarmed population depend on blacks and women as core supportive groups.  They are losing that support.

It sounds like you perceived my comment as racist. It was of course not racist at all, I never once mentioned a Race or ethnicity. Do you deny that there is an epidemic today among inner city minority youth today concerning a lack of personal responsibility, a lack of respect, and a lack of faith? Do you know what an “epidemic” is? An “epedemic” does NOT mean everyone is afflicted! It means MANY are afflicted. Did I ever insinuate that 100% of inner city minority youth exhibit these problems? Of course not. But you take offense at the strictly “perceived” slight. Welcome to the Democratic party....anyone who criticizes the culture of the”victim classes” is a racist hater. I grew up in an inner city housing project. I watched those around me destroy the facilities, urinate in the elevators and throw garbage out their windows. My family did none of those things. I was brought up by a Mother and a Father who worked hard, and EXPECTED responsible and lawful behavior from their children. Most of my neighbors did NOT grow up in households like this. So feel free to quote my in your next rant on HuffPo.

Well, you're commenting on a thread about teaching gun skills to black youth in the inner city. How could I possibly construe your words as anything other than racist, when you say you're opposed to giving such training to "inner city youths"?

We both know that's code for 'black kids'.

I've battled with your type on this forum before. Instead of just admitting that you've lumped ALL black people into a stereotype that represents the lowest common denominator, you'll double down on your insult and make me the bad guy for having the temerity to point out the obvious.

No problem. You're free to think whatever you want. Just don't insult my intelligence by claiming you meant something other than what you said.

“Just don’t insult my intelligence by claiming you meant something other than what you said.”

Inner city youth is “code for Black youth”? Sounds like you are the racist, since inner city minority youth today probably includes more Hispanic youth than African youth. But of course, you KNOW what I meant because I am a racist. And you know my “Type” since you’ve battled that “Type” on here before. And I am the “racist”, you would NEVER just lump people together like that. And no, inner city youth today have no problem with their culture. Any problems they face are solely due to racism and insufficient government programs and funding. Glad to have you on this conservative board.

I’m a bit perplexed, perhaps you can educate me. Your posts seem quite Conservative. Yet you take offense at my criticism of inner city minority youth culture. Seems like a contradiction to me. If I posted several links to columns by African American Conservatives also critical of inner city minority youth culture today, would you also deem those writers racists?

What I take offense to, is your lumping all inner city youth (i.e., black kids) into one monolithic culture. The 'culture' you speak of, and which you appear to be unwilling to grant our shared inalienable American rights to, is the stereotypical, lowest common denominator amongst that group.

You claim to have worked in the inner city, which somehow makes you an expert on black youth. Well, let me tell you something. I was a black youth who grew up in the inner city. Black kids are as varied in their perceptions, attitudes, and outlooks, as any other cross section of the population. They're not all the same, and not nearly as undeserving as you think they are.

African youth.

Well lookee there. African? Now you're stripping black kids of their American citizenship.

You slipped up and tipped your hand with that.
