It is high summer on Gaza City’s beach. A horse and cart patrols the shore selling brightly coloured swimming rings. A small boat is giving joy rides out to sea. Families sit on chairs while a few children play in the water.
Normally, in the midst of the school holidays, the beach would be crowded. Particularly this year, as an electricity crisis makes many homes unbearable during the heat. But these days many parents are keeping their children away.
The first hint is the smell: the sulphurous odour of raw sewage.
Where children are swimming the water is a murky brown, with a fine suspension of faecal matter visible to the naked eye. Small fish at the water’s edge, scooped out by the giggling children, are dead.

Gaza year 1967-1993...cesspool but prosperous, Israeli rule.
Gaza year 1993-2006...cesspool, PLO rule, launches missiles at Israel, PLO blames Hamas.
Gaza year 2007-2017...cesspool, Hamas rule, launches missiles and wars at Israel, blames Al Nusra front.
In general, Gaza has always been a hole but the HAMAS and PLO could have raised the quality of life for it’s residents but both anal-antic terror groups decided it was better to invest Western aid and monies into weapons and offensive attack capabilities instead of building a productive state.
Their choice, their lives, their cesspool. So what does it mean when the Left and idiots parade around with signs saying “Free Gaza”? Free Gaza from...whom?? From HAMAS???
My only regret is that their garbage flows in the direction of Israel. Israel should create a current that keeps the sewage permanently at the (once gorgeous) Gaza beaches.
Back in the 1960’s, we used to walk from Subic Bay Naval base into Olongapo, crossing a bridge over what we called “Shit Creek.” It definitely deserved the name since it was the means of removal for the waste from all the homes along the river.
We used to flip coins to the kids swimming in the river, they’d dive down, find the coin, then come up with a big smile holding the coin high.
I went back a few years ago, it still stinks to high heaven but Olongapo is no longer the same place, if you know what I mean.
