It is certainly possible that Martin said something to escalate the encounter, but there is no evidence of this.

It's not what Martin said, it's what he did that got him killed.

Oops. I meant to have said that Zimmerman may have said something to escalate the situation. Me bad. But we’ll never know if that was the case unless he changes his story. The point is — as most here will agree — that the evidence presented at trial required a finding of self-defense. All the rest is sheer speculation.
