LONDON The mother of a terminally ill baby has said her son still has a chance of surviving thanks to the interventions of U.S. President Donald Trump and Pope Francis.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4 early Monday, Connie Yates said that attention brought by comments from Trump and the pontiff had turned their sons fight for survival into into an international issue.
When asked if it had made all the difference, Yates said that it had saved his life so far.
Baby Charlie suffers from a rare genetic condition, an inherited mitochondrial disease generally referred to as MDDS, or mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome. As a result, he is unable to move his arms or legs or breathe unaided.
The childs parents have fought to raise $1.8 million to bring him to the United States for experimental treatment they believe could help.....

My VERY serious problem with this whole story is that a government (actually two, if you want to consider the EU to be a real government) believes it has the right to kill a baby its parents want to save. Can we all spell “Third Reich”, boys and girls? And no, I did not over-use the Nazi meme; when it’s appropriate, it should be used.
“Right to kill” is the correct term. The problem would be more complicated if they wished to continue relying on the socialized medical care—when one relies upon the government to allocate scarce resources, one is taking one’s chances—but as they want to get out of the system, this aspect ceases to be an issue.
You’re correct. And “it’s for their own good!” doesn’t cut it. What’s next, people with Alzheimer’s?
Is there any doubt what the child’s life expectancy would be with 0bama or Hillary
Every senator who does not wish toto tally repeal Obamacare should be primaries and an ad talking about gov’trun healthcare should highlight this baby’s plight! THIS is what we are staring at with gov’t run healthcare....
Yup. An official death panel. If you read any of the comments to the stories available in the press, there was tremendous support. Why are Europeans so willingly subjugated?
Except...the Pope changed his position after receiving bad reviews on his first decision.
I didn’t realize that papal comments were now interactive. There must be a smartphone app that I need to download, or something.
well said
I read that as well. The pope sided with the courts, which surprised me. He then received a lot of negative feedback and flipped his position.
You’re absolutely right.
It shocks me when I look at the comments section on the Daily Mail. Yes I know its not an accurate measure of opinion, but generally it leans right - people are actually turning on these poor parents.
I’m so angry about it - who the hell do these people think they are that they can decide who gets to live and die.
Also a note - Nigel Farage has had these parents on his radio show and is supporting their cause which was pleasing to see.
AND he flipped it the day AFTER President Trump’s tweet.
BRING “Baby” CHARLIE GARD TO THE USA FOR TREATMENT, IMMEDIATELY!!! Thank you Pope Francis & POTUS, Donald J. Trump....Champions of life!!!
But, they’re still trapped in England, right?
Agreed. It’s not an argument between diagnosticians, and it’s not a $$$ question. It’s this: who owns the baby?
National govt. agencies?
International govt. agencies?
Correct answer: every baby “belongs” to God, to himself, and to the care/responsibility of his parents.
Butt out, arrogant, patronizing power-grabbers from on high. And take your damned “ethicists” with you.
The question is, if he were Obama or Hillary’s wicked spawn, would the result have been the same?
Not exactly correct. A representative of the Vatican sided with the courts, the Pope then came out with his, favoring Charlie.
exactly. He was not a profile in courage on this by any means.
Did NBC news change article title?
