Donald Trump announced in an Iowa rally last week that he would be seeking to put in place laws that mean newly arrived migrants would be ineligible for collecting any form of Welfare payments during their first five years in the country. Based on a survey of 1000 people, polling company Rasmussen has announced that a large majority support President Trump position on this.
The two questions asked were:
1* Before anyone receives local, state or federal government services, should they be required to prove they are legally allowed to be in the United States? 2* A proposal has been made to bar immigrants to the United States from receiving taxpayer-funded welfare benefits for the first five years they are in this country. Do you favor or oppose barring new immigrants to the United States from receiving welfare benefits for at least five years?

Winning!
Excellent!!! A lot fewer will desire to come here.
Will this apply to the so-called refugees too? I sure hope so.
I would feel much better if it was said “illegal aliens” are not eligible for welfare benefits.
I think you are missing the point. Even new, legal immigrants should not be eligible for five years.
I came to America in 1991 and I had to swear an affidavit that i would not take any kind of welfare for 5 years. has this been changed or is the law not enforced?
Not enforced. And I believe ‘refugees’ are exempt anyway.
I didn’t miss the legal part. That is good, but illegals should not ever get bennies.
Two words. Aunt Zetuni.
Even this doesn’t go far enough. All they have to do (and in a lot of cases, for both legal and illegal, this is what happens) is pop out an anchor baby, then apply for all the goodies in the name of the citizen baby. They’ve got to make it so if the head of the house is immigrant and under 5 years, even if they start popping out anchor babies, they still don’t qualify. And if the head of the house is illegal, no benefits in the name of the kid, no matter how long the parent has been in the country. It’s the only way to stem the tide.
Well, illegal aliens are covered in the first sentence...
It’s about time. If immigrants, with short time exceptions for some real refugees, had never been permitted welfare or tax credits illegal immigration would be a highly manageable trickle rather than the gimme flood we have had. With no possibility of welfare at any level, the illegals that we would still get would be productive people and an amnesty at irregular intervals but averaging no more than once a generation might be sensible. It would be more like it was a century ago when the only bars really were health and political proclivities. Returning to the immigration policies of the 50s would be sensible and productive. Before the Kennedy Abomination we pretty much drew the brains of the world to the USA and it aided the technological rise of the Nation.
Those groups I referenced, in the extremely limited numbers that have been permitted, have become Citizens in the assimilation and productive sense quickly. The various Orthodox and Byzantine rite organizations and families have stepped up to help them adjust, even the Yezidis.
90%+ of middle eastern refugees are still on some form of government assistance after many years. That’s what I want to see ended.
Absolutely and 90% of that 90% are better classed as invaders, not refugees. They are not running from anything but are looking to replicate the homeland in America, all of America.
Yes it has changed...
when I immigrated in 1971 I had to swear I wouldn’t apply for welfare etc EVER or I WOULD be deported...
There was no 5 year window...
Meanwhile the illegal aliens have never been under any ban or time limits or rules against receiving welfare etc...
The Real Refugees almost by definition have to have some assist when they first arrive

Why ???
what’s the difference between a refugee and an immigrant ???
“Why ???
whats the difference between a refugee and an immigrant ???”
Refugees are escaping something dangerous, immigrants are everyone else.
Refugees get EVERYTHING handed to them-——it’s maddening.
Refugees even go to the top of the list for senior housing, bypassing long time citizens who have been waiting for years.
